Happy Tail: A Corgi named Bernie brings a dream to life

Sometimes an idea attaches itself on a person tighter than a tick on a dog. That’s what was bugging Emily Oline. She got the notion that she wanted to adopt a Corgi already named Bernie – and what were the odds of that?

Her husband (then fiancé) had a dog named Hailey, and frankly, she was a little jealous of their close bond. “There is really nothing like the love a man has with his dog,” she says.

One day he suggested they visit a shelter, and her hopes soared, thinking that it meant they would get another dog. During the visit, she fell for a dog named Arnold, but when they returned the following day, he had already been adopted.

“I was heartbroken, but decided it just wasn’t meant to be,” she says. But now, she was determined to find a dog to adopt. She began browsing on Petfinder and noticed a dog named Bernard.

“I thought, what the heck, I’ll click on him and just see what kind of dog he is,” she says. She was flabbergasted to see he was a Corgi.

She was beside herself and called Jeff, insisting they immediately had to go meet Bernard, who had been listed on Petfinder by the Denver Animal Shelter, which would be closing for the day in about 15 minutes.

“If there was a world record for getting ready to go somewhere quickly, I surely beat the record that day,” she says. “Somehow we made it there before they closed.”

His former family had surrendered Bernard, and the couple was warned that he didn’t like men. So they were prepared for some aggression when he spotted Jeff. He approached and jumped right in Jeff’s lap and settled in, friendly as can be.

“Tears were streaming down my face, and all I had to do was look at Jeff and know he agreed: We needed this dog,” she says.

They arranged for the adoption and brought Bernie the Corgi home. It just goes to show that sometimes fixations can be positive.
