Note from Our FounderNote from Our Founder

Dear Friends,

Today I read that, in a USA Today survey, 17% of people polled would most like to volunteer for an animal cause. If that's true, then we should be seeing more people helping out at local shelters. Some shelters have rockin' volunteer programs (check out the San Diego Humane Society and its 900+ volunteers), while others have none (or few). Is a lackluster outreach program to blame? Your local shelter may be caught in a vicious cycle: Without a strong volunteer program, the staff may not have time and resources to develop an effective outreach program that would, in turn, attract volunteers. You can help. Visit with your shelter (or foster group) and offer to socialize animals, organize events, do home visits, transport animals, or do a towel/bedding/food drive at your work. It's okay to interview the local shelters -- there are plenty to choose from. Find the one that's right for you.

 As ever,

HAPPY TAIL: Senior Serenity

Shellie was waiting for a home at age 16 when Karen Palchanes adopted her. "I had to save her before it was too late," the Lebanon, N.J., woman says. She has made it her mission to give senior shelter dogs a home in their last years. "How can you let an old, tired or sick soul stay in a kennel?" she asks.

Here's What You Said

In our October newsletter, we asked those of you who volunteer for local shelters or rescue groups what's so special about helping adoptable pets. Mary volunteers her grooming services at her local shelter and also fosters dogs at her home. "It is a perfect way for me to give back to the community," she says, "to help the hardworking people who staff the clinics and kennels and to give love and care to homeless and needy shelter dogs."
