Our Mission

The Chesapeake Humane Society, located in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake is a private, non-profit organization that works to promote the welfare of companion animals throughout Hampton Roads. CHS does not receive government funding and is not affiliated with any national humane organization or other Virginia-based animal welfare organizations. We are entirely dependent upon the generosity of individual and corporate supporters to fund our programs and services. Although we are not affiliated with, or funded by, the City of Chesapeake, we do work closely with Chesapeake Animal Services to help find homes for animals in the City shelter.

Adoption Policy

Chesapeake Humane Society has many adoptable pets looking for their forever homes. We have dogs, cats, and small animals at our Adoption Center located at 1149 New Mill Drive in Chesapeake.

How to Adopt a Pet...

Step 1: Determine the pet that is best for your lifestyle. Since your new pet will be with you for the rest of its life, this is an important commitment that should not be rushed! If needed, our adoption counselors are happy to guide you and help you find your perfect fit.

Step 2: Select your pet and complete the adoption application. Filling out an application does not obligate you to adopt. Submit your application online or at the Humane Society.

Step 3: Once your application is approved, we can schedule any additional meet-and-greets (if needed).

Step 4: Provide a loving new home for your new addition to the family! We encourage you to keep in touch with us – we love receiving updates and if you ever need advice, we are here to help!
