Volunteers in Defense of Animals is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization who was founded in 2015 by a group of passionate volunteers who have been working for years to end the mistreatment and suffering of all animals. Our mission is to protect and help dogs and cats from homelessness, neglect, abuse, cruelty, and abandonment.
1. VIEW OUR ADOPTABLE PETS ONLINE.
We're currently not open to the public, but you can easily make an appointment by first filling out an application and setting up a time with us once we've reviewed your application! Our availability usually ranges from 10 AM - 4 PM all days, but we are flexible and can work with you.
2.) APPLY TO ADOPT THE PET.
Filling out the adoption application helps us ensure that your home is a good fit for the pet you're interested in. We spend lots of time with the dogs and cats in our care and often have a network of volunteers to help us determine if a pet would be happy in your home! One of our biggest goals is to find the best possible home for our rescues.
3.) MEET THE PET AFTER YOUR APPLICATION IS REVIEWED!
We often get 10+ applications for an animal but can only choose one. However, if it doesn't work out with the first family, we'll contact you! Your application also works for any other pets in our care, so be sure to periodically check our adoptables list. We'd also be happy to keep an eye out for any pets that match the criteria you're looking for - just let us know. After your home is approved, you'll be able to meet the pet either at our shelter, or we'd love to take your possible future best friend closer to where you're located. We go to San Diego and Griffith Park on a weekly basis to cover as much area as we can! Anywhere in between is possible for a meeting spot too.
4.) TAKE YOUR PET HOME ON A TRIAL PERIOD OR COMPLETE THE ADOPTION.
When you meet your pet, certain animals are eligible for a 1-2 week trial period where you'll be able to see how he or she does in your home environment. Often times, rescue animals take a little time to turn around and show their personalities to people, and they're not always the best at first impressions! If you think you've found the perfect match, you can complete the adoption right when you meet your pet, or you can complete the adoption and just pick up your pet later in the week if you need time to set up your home. You'll have the opportunity to ask our adoption coordinators and volunteers any questions about caring for your pet.
IF THINGS AREN'T WORKING OUT ON YOUR TRIAL...
Sometimes, you may find that the pet you brought home on a trial period may not be the happiest in your home. We completely understand, and we're dedicated to finding the perfect match for you! Don't hesitate to contact us and let us know if you're having any hesitations. We promise we'll find a perfect home for your pet! If you ever encounter any medical issues while your pet is on trial, please contact us before going to your veterinarian. We are able to pay for services from our veterinarian if your pet is having any health issues, but we may not be able to reimburse your bills if you've gone to your own vet.
