Meet Moonshine
3/23/21
Moonshine wants to go and she wants to please. She settles down out on the trails and is very enjoyable to ride. It is my goal to find her a home that is willing to feed hay year round and someone who is more laid back and chill because she can even tell when i go from super relaxed to all excited and she gets a little worked up.
UPDATE: 12/22/20
Took Moonshine out for a trail ride this morning and she did great. She has lots of spirit and go for the first mile and than evens out. She was aware of her surroundings but not high strung or spooky. Basically she gaited and moved out for the first while but then was happy to slow down and walk. I think part of her wants to keep her feet moving is due to possibly being shown and just made to be jumped on and "go". She can be a bit nervous if someone with high energy is working her up but she did calm down and relax out on the trail today.
Several years ago I got into a squabble with another one of my pasture mates and they kicked me really hard in the mouth. After sometime my teeth in the front top slowly got loosened and fell out causing me to not be able to graze as well. My owners didn’t know what to do so they took me to an auction hoping someone could maybe help me. They didn’t know how horrifying the places auctions lead to can be or I’m sure they would have tried something else. I was scared and didn’t know what I could do. I didn’t like being haled up with all the other horses cuz I was gonna get kicked, or so I thought. I was skinny and lacking energy to fight. I count myself one of the lucky ones having made it to Horse Plus and they made sure I was not in pain. Within a week they were checking me and my health again and I overheard them exclaiming about how much weight I gained… but you would have to ask them about that. :-)
Moonshine has defiantly surprised us with how big of a turn around she made so fast considering her conditions. She is doing very well and likes to tell her pasture mates she’s the boss. It is pretty easy to catch her and she just needs a refresher on leading politely but all in all she’s a decent mare. She is a bit skittish of somethings and needs a gentle hand to let her know she’s safe. She picks up all her feet and stands to be saddled. She is a little on the nervous side being ridden but is willing to work with her rider. She would be a better fit for an intermediate rider who is willing to work her through her issues. I think she was most likely miss handled in her day and with no doubt that would cause trust issues. She is top of the pecking order with most other horses, and is a forward horse under saddle. However, she does have a semi decent “whoa” and I think plenty of life to share. When she came in I worried because sometimes when horses are missing teeth they just aren’t able to regain the health as easily but within 7 days she gained right around 120lbs! That is shocking and all I can credit it to is having plenty of hay to eat (rather than having to graze). I’m glad we have helped her this far, now it is up to you to continue giving her a happy remaining life. Wether in helping support the organization or in making a commitment when adopting her to care for her and love her. She doesn’t deserve to ever wonder what will happen to her again.
