Zeek Chihuahua Mix Kentwood, MI

Zeek, a Chihuahua mix, joined Pet Tales June 8th, 2021 after the traumatic event of the passing of an owner and his other owner no longer able to care for him. It took a few weeks for Zeek to accept the hand fate had dealt him in losing his parents, his old pack and his familiar home.
Prior to becoming a foster, Zeek lived in a home with other dogs and cats. His foster home also has other dogs and a kitty. We think he'd rather not live with kitties, but he'll tolerate them if he must.
The vet puts Zeek at a young 6 years old and 14.5lbs. He's spunky and filled with Chihuahua attitude! He's an independent soul who loves to explore, which could lead to trouble if a door is left open long enough for him to scurry out. A double-door system is suggested.
Zeek knows his name and will respond if he isn't busy with something else. He also recognizes commands to "come" and "sit"...when he feels like it. He usually feels like listening when there's a food reward.
Recently, Zeek had a dental done where 9 teeth were removed, greatly improving his breath and a little bit of the Chihuahua-tude.
He doesn't care much for being picked up, but if he is riding in your arms, prefers to be positioned to look forward (general positioning like a furry 4-legged football). No children under 12, please. But he loves to give kisses, snuggle and also cozy up under blankets.
Zeek will do okay in a crate, but he isn't crated often.
He is house trained in a mix of going outside to a fenced backyard or using a wee pad inside. This arrangement is due to his overnight stealthiness (He doesn't wake anyone up).
Zeek has been diagnosed with a heart murmur, but that doesn't keep him down. He doesn't cough much or show fatigue. In true Chihuahua form, he's an excellent alarm system. He's quite vigilant and will announce anyone/anything that reaches a close proximity of the home. For this reason, he's not well suited for apartment living.
