Zach's Story
All About Zach Zach is a happy, highly intelligent, energetic, very sweet and loving dog. Zach is a quiet dog with a sensitive nature. ZACH is full-grown at 16-months. He has been neutered. He is a Shepherd/Doberman/possibly Miniature Pinscher mix. He is trim and sleek and nicely filled out at 50 lbs.
Zach loves to play with other dogs. He doesnÂ’t care which one is the alpha dog; he just wants to run and play. He runs for the sheer joy of running! He also LOVES to romp in the snow. He likes to CHEW things, especially on his very own stuffies, rawhide bones, and real bones.
Zach is also GREAT with CATS!!!

Reason Zach is up for adoption: Current owner is out of town every 4-6 weeks.

Training: Zach is crate-trained and loves his crate for his long afternoon naps, or when heÂ’s going to be left home alone, or at other times, when there is too much going on around him.
Zach is housebroken. HeÂ’s only had 2 accidents since I got him, and that was early on. He doesnÂ’t “tell me” when he needs to go out, but I take him outside 2-3 hours after eating or drinking, and tell him to “Go Wet” He does his business promptly, and IÂ’ve been rewarding him most times with a crunchy doggie treat. He has a good bladder and sleeps through the night easily.
Zach successfully completed the Beginners Class at Petsmart in November, 2007.
He was very easy to train on the following commands: Sit, Stay, Down, Off, Wait, Shake Hands, Take It, Leave It. When on a leash walk, he is very good about sitting as soon as you come to a stop.

He is good about ‘WAITINGÂ’ at the top of the stairs, until you are at the bottom and tell him itÂ’s OK to come. He WAITS on the front porch, off-leash, until owner has gotten snow gear on and is ready to join him. Then all owner has to say is “in the car” and Zach WAITS by the car door, until it is opened.

He does an excellent STAY, with distractions and distance, and owner disappearing for a few minutes.

He does a ‘college levelÂ’ COME most of the time when in familiar surroundings. If itÂ’s a field he is well-acquainted with, he will come long distances, even with other dogs around. He will run full-bore to you, sit at your feet, and eagerly await his $10,000 treat.  (A $10,000 treat for Zach is tiny bites of Mozzarella cheese, turkey, or pumpkin cookie. I save these treats for the COME command. When learning simpler commands the crunchy-type of doggie treats works fine.)

We are still working on heel and walking with a loose leash. I would recommend a “Gentle Leader Headcollar” at this point of his training. He is also ready for the Intermediate Class at Petsmart, which would be an excellent way to continue the training heÂ’s already had, AND get Zach and his new owner on the ‘same pageÂ’.

ZachÂ’s History: It seems that Zach was abandoned in a back yard for most of his first year.
Consequently, he did not receive the socializing that a normal dog would have had by living with a family, and being both an inside and an outside dog. He is wary of small children and strangers that are not dog owners. He has never shown any aggressiveness towards things that scare him. However, because he wants to remove himself from the situation ASAP, he can wriggle out of his normal collar suddenly. Therefore, for ZachÂ’s safety, I feel it is a must to have a choke collar on Zach at all times when he is out of the house. He is both skittish and curious when taken to a new surrounding, such as Petsmart. He is making good progress towards getting braver when introduced to new surroundings. He has instantly liked all dog-owners so far.

When I adopted him in Oct 2007, he was 8 lbs underweight. HeÂ’d never been in a house before. He was scared of nearly everything. Since that time, heÂ’s adjusted beautifully to being an inside dog, and loves to be outside, as long as I am with him. HeÂ’s getting better about being outside on his own, for short periods. He loves to ride in the car. He is easily frightened by unexpected noises or movements: yelling, stomping, a newspaper being thrown, a loud voice, etc. A firecracker terrifies him. He is getting more comfortable w/everyday noises such as vacuuming and piano playing.

As Zach continues to mature and socialize, I feel he will become a most loyal, obedient, and devoted companion. Zach deserves to have a home where he will get lots of exercise off-leash. He does really well with two runs a day. [He would LOVE a wilderness setting w/rabbits to chase!] Most of all, Zach deserves to have patient, quiet, loving owners who are ready and willing to work with him. Zach has an endearing way of easily connecting heart-to-heart with others. Zach is a great dog!
