Meet Wonka
Wonka came to the shelter as a stray a year ago. He was scared, skinny, and neglected. His Chesapeake retriever red coat now shines and he is a healthy 60 pounds.
Wonka is a favorite of all who care for him because he is so affectionate and eager to learn new things. He has learned to walk nicely on the leash and play politely in the yard. He relaxes easily in a crate which facilitates the transition from shelter life to a home. When visiting the home of volunteers, he is calm, good with the children, very well mannered and appears to be house trained. He is an excellent passenger in the car and falls asleep (big snores!!) almost immediately at the start of any excursion.
He would do well in an adult household or one with older kids. He enjoys the company of other dogs in playgroups at the shelter, but would probably do best as an only pet at the outset when transitioning from the shelter to a home.
