Whiskey is definitely a true red heeler! He's very smart and sweet. He loves water: he digs in his water bowl, catches water from the hose, and loves pools! He also loves our big grassy run. Whiskey's favorite toys are squeaky toys, which he will play fetch with or just toss about for himself.
Whiskey gets along with other dogs when introduced slowly. He does prefer female dogs over male dogs. Once he has made friends he shows his true, goofy self! This boy acts mean but is actually afraid of any dog showing him aggression and tries to avoid the interaction.
Being a herding dog, Whiskey will guard his person. He requires a slow introduction to new people and will need someone with experience to give him the outlets he needs to satisfy his instincts. The ideal person will be active, patient, and understand that this breed is not for beginners.
Whiskey walks well on a leash, and knows sit, hug, and lay down. He could use some help refining his manners, as can become somewhat energetic when playing and will jump on you.
He needs a home where he will have a job. It's in his breed to run and work. Whiskey has the heeler instinct to nip when kids are running, because he thinks he's doing his job and herding them. Because of this we recommend he not go to a home with small children. He'll make a great companion for someone that understands what he needs and has dog training experience. The perfect home would be on a farm. Red heelers are ranked the 10th smartest breed. He's eager to please and learn.
Whiskey is available at a reduced adoption fee thanks to a generous sponsor. The adoption application process still applies. Whiskey's adoption includes neuter, rabies, distemper, bordatella, flea treatment, worming, testing for heartworms and treatment, and microchipping.
If you are interested in meeting Whiskey, please visit the shelter at 22407 Bus Hwy 151 on the outskirts of Monticello during normal business hours which are Tuesday thru Saturday, noon to 6:30pm. If you have any further questions, you can call 319-975-8283.
BREED DISCLAIMER: Many dogs come to us as strays and therefore, we are unsure of their breed. We may actually list a pure bred as a mix because we truly do not know their origins or background and we often must guess at their breed.
