Meet Wheeler

Hey! Big cutie pie Wheeler ready to POP a wheelie into your life. I am a young adult (between 1 and 2 years old) Pit Bull mix who was found as a stray. I was quite underweight and needing some TLC. Now my milk chocolate coat is looking good, and as you can see from my pictures, my goofball personality is showing. I am a sweet boy, but seem to be always on guard. I can be very uncomfortable with handling if I don’t know you well. This is why I will need a home with children over 12 years old. One I warm up to you, I will lay across your lap and even offer a kiss or two. An adopter that is somewhat experienced with owning dogs is best because of my fearfulness and being leery of new things. The good folks here will speak with you prior to adoption on how to help me improve! I love toys and rather enjoy them by myself. Perhaps I didn’t receive much attention in my earlier life and learned how to keep myself entertained! I cannot live with cats, but I did do well meeting another dog. I am forward at first, but did loosen up and we played off leash! Won’t you give me the love and care I deserve? How could you resist this big pouty face?!

Medical: Even though HSHA staff and volunteers make every effort possible to make a dog’s new shelter home welcoming, it is still a place where dogs will be confined, separated from their previous families, and exposed to more noise due to the close proximity of other dogs. These environmental changes are very stressful for most dogs. When a dog’s shelter stay is lengthened, their stress levels increase. During Wheeler’s stay at HSHA, he was started on medication to help reduce his stress levels. We recommend continuing on this medication as he transitions into your home environment. We have dispensed enough medication to last during this transition. Please contact us or speak directly with your veterinarian if you have any behavioral concerns or would like to discuss continuing this medication long term. Medication is not a replacement for stress relieving behavioral enrichment and training methods. Please contact our behavior team to discuss their recommendations to help transition your dog into their new home.
