Meet Vera

Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at www.seniordoghaven.org under the Adoption Process tab.
Please note that because all of our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about an hour of Wilmington, DE in order for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in person home visit.

Vera is a sweet, timid 12 year old chihuahua who is looking for a special family. She is lower energy and a little love once she gets comfortable. Vera weighs about 12 lbs.

Vera was surrendered into a local shelter because she was too scared and nervous to be around the grandchildren. She was terrified and shut down in the shelter so they called Senior Dog Haven for help. We were able to find Vera a foster and get her to our vets. Sadly, Vera was found to have a pretty significant heart murmur. We followed up with a cardiologist who reported that her chest x-rays show an enlarged heart with mild congestive heart failure (fluid in her lungs). The echocardiogram shows that Vera has severe chronic valvular disease causing leakage in the left heart valve. There is also moderate leakage in the right valve. She also was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. (high blood pressure of the vessels in the lungs). Her ECG also shows irregular heart beats due to her heart issues. She has been started on cardiac medications to remove fluid in her lungs and help support her heart. Although the average survival rate for a heart like hers is 12 months (6-18 months), we are hoping that we can still find her a furever home to live out as many months as she has left.
Due to her heart condition, our vet did not feel that she was a candidate for the anesthesia necessary to do a full dental so she does have some untreated dental disease. We do not believe that her dental disease will impact the quality of her life in what time she has left.

Vera needs a patient family who will allow her time to warm up. She startles easily so would do best In a home without small children. She does well with other small dogs although she doesn’t love to share her food or bed. Vera wears a diaper with cute little suspenders because one of her heart medications (Lasix) makes her drink and potty a lot. She doesn’t mind though. She thinks her suspenders make her looks extra cool; don’t you agree?

Anyone would be lucky to have Vera as part of the family. Will you be her special person and adopt this sweet girl?
