Posted 3/15/2017. Hi there, my name is Trevor! I’m a 6-7 year old Yellow Lab/German Shepherd mix who is looking for the perfect home to call my forever home. I had a pretty rough life before being rescued, but I’m hoping once you read my story and see how well I’ve done in foster care that you can overlook that and consider making me a part of your family.

My story starts in North Carolina. I was found running loose in a very rural community where people don’t treat dogs and cats too well. Animal Control picked me up and took me to the shelter, but that place was pretty scary too. Unfortunately, I was what they call a feral dog. OK well semi-feral…I was still sweet and nice but just very scared of humans and unfamiliar things! Nobody knows how long I was running loose on my own or if I had ever had a family of my own. I hid under my bed every day at the shelter and (thankfully) that was what kept me safe. Had the person who ran the shelter seen me and realized that I was feral they likely would not have allowed me to ever leave that place. Fortunately for me, the lady who took care of us dogs kept me safe, and got me out of that scary place and to the safety of a rescue group.

I arrived in Harrisburg, PA in August of 2014 and stayed with my foster mom and foster dog siblings until November 2016. My foster family was great. They taught me how to live in a home, taught me that dogs don’t need to sleep outside and that being an inside dog is a great thing! I do sometimes still get scared around strangers, but I’m a sweet gentle guy who just needs a home that can be patient and let me settle in. I used to be afraid of everything – even leashes or being brushed – but my foster mom has worked with me and I’m doing so good being a regular old dog these days! I’ve even become an important part of the household. I’ve welcomed other foster dogs in and helped them get used to being in our home. My foster mom says I’m a great rescue ambassador!

I get along with other dogs, male and female. One thing though that I have not had much exposure to is human kids, because foster mom didn't have any of those. I would likely be overwhelmed by children so a home with no little kids would be best.

Foster mom says that I would do best in a home with a fence. This is a precaution because of my previous life and how I was running loose. She thinks that a fence would keep me safe and then I wouldn’t be tempted to run off and return to my wild-child roots.

I’m happy to say that I am housebroken and even crate trained. I used to be scared of crates but now my crate is my “safe” place that I go to when I need to unwind or have my space. My favorite treat in the whole world are Redbarn Bully Slices….man I love those!

The one thing that I don’t like though are baths…man I hate those things! I do get baths here at home but foster mom has to lift me into the tub, deadweight and all, because I act like such a big baby. Because I am a German Shepherd Dog mix I will also require regular brushing a few times a week, especially during shedding seasons. I am neutered, up to date on my shots, and microchipped. In November of 2016, I entered the HOPE Dogs prison program in Camp Hill. You can follow my progress here: http://hopedogs.org/hope-dogs/current-parolees/103-trevor.html
