Meet Topaz

Hello! My name is Topaz! The vet thinks I am a Catahoula/Boxer mix. I'm about 10 months old and weigh about 50 lbs. I'm a bit of a worrier (okay, a lot of one) and it takes me a while to settle down and relax in the house without getting up and pacing every few minutes. I love to follow my person wherever they go and am very nervous about the noises outside. I am scared of men, but will warm up to them if you give me a chance. I will growl and bark at them inside, but outside all I want to do is go back in the house and get away!

I do well with other dogs, but I still have a lot of puppy energy and will need to be supervised around small dogs so that I don't squish them. I love big dogs and I like to play rough with them. I like toys that I can chew and wrestle with. I don't particularly care for my crate, but I will settle down once you leave the room. My foster mom thinks I am housebroken, but isn't quite sure yet. We don't know how I feel about cats.

I love kids, but will need to be supervised if I have younger kids in the house with me for the same reason as with small dogs - when I get excited, I can get to be a little like a runaway train and don't pay much attention to what is in my way. I want to use my mouth during play, but my foster mom is teaching me that it isn't okay with people because sometimes I'm stronger than I think I am. My foster home has a 2 year old kiddo and I am quite sweet and gentle with her when I'm not having a puppy moment. I have learned quick, though - in less than 15 minutes I stopped trying to play bite the little one. I still try to on foster mom, but now all it takes is a "No" to remind me of my manners. I don't know any basic commands yet, other than "Drop it," but I am working on those as well.

I do fairly well on a leash, although I have trouble sticking to one side while I am walking. I do pull occasionally, but am corrected fairly easily. However, if I hear something I think is scary while on a walk, I will dig in my heels and all I want to do is turn around and go home. I have a tendency to guard my food from other dogs and I'll need to be closely supervised while I eat if there are other dogs around, or I'll just have to be fed separately.

My ideal home would be an active one that can help me get my exercise or one with another big dog I can wrestle with to burn off my extra energy. I think, once I outgrow my puppy stage, I will be a pretty mellow pup that is content to be a lazybones at home. I need an owner that can be patient with me and help me work through my anxiety about everything in the big outdoors.
