Meet Tonka

Meet Tonka!!! Tonka is a 6-8 month old, 38 pound, Shepherd/Hound mix who was rescued from a high intake shelter in West Virginia. This is what his foster has to say about this big lug!!!

He is a lover and doesn't know a stranger, male or female! Goes potty outside but doesn't really tell me yet. I just take the dogs out several times during the day. He always goes potty outside.

He sleeps in the kennel at night and doesn't mind one bit going in there and never makes a peep! He loves affection, pets, belly rubs, anything as long as you're paying attention to him. haha He also plays well by himself, his favorite toy being a round squeaky ball.

He loves anything that squeaks or grunts, soft toys, and mostly all toys. I put the toys away every night in the toy box and he drags every one of them out in the morning. As you can see he plays so nice with my dog Milo. He is going to get bigger or else I would keep this dog.

He is just perfect. So loving and kind. Very laid back except when he is playing with Milo! Loves running around in the yard too. He also loves chewing on his compressed rawhide bone!

He must have had a rough start in life, but that doesn't seem to bother him. He is a happy go lucky puppy and learning commands as we go along. I don't think anyone ever worked with training him, but I am doing what I can. He pretty much knows how to sit and no so far. Also, he rides great in the car but would be best if he is put into a kennel when riding in the car.

He has this little quirk that when I bring Milo and Tonka in the house from the yard, he won't come in unless I go in first and he can't see me. Then he will come into the house.

He is doing much much better since going to the vet yesterday. Takes his medicine with NO problems (I put it in cheese).

I feel that he would make a wonderful addition to anybody. It would also be best if he has a FENCED IN YARD and also another dog to play with (at least 30-40 pounds).

Tonka also tested positive for Lyme, which is a non-contagious tick borne disease. Lyme will remain with Tonka for the remainder of his life, and should a flare-up occur, it will be indicated by joint pain/inflammation and lethargy. Typically, a dose of antibiotics is enough to cause the disease to go dormant again. He will also need a yearly Lyme vaccine as well. Lyme has become more prevalent in the dogs HART has pulled from Kentucky/West Virginia and many many of our adopted dogs have gone on to live long healthy lives!

Tonka's cherry eye will also be surgically removed before he's adopted!!

If you would like to meet Tonka, please go to HART's website at www.rescueahart.org and fill out an online adoption application.

All HART dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on all vaccines, including bordatella and rabies. They are heartworm tested and on preventative for heartworm, fleas, and ticks. If you are interested in any of our pets, you must complete an online dog adoption application at www.rescueAhart.org . The application will put you in touch with this wonderful dog's foster family so you can schedule a meeting. Thanks! www.rescueAhart.org
