Meet Toby - the Loyal
According Wikipedia, Hachiko was a dog living in Japan and is remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his owner, even many years after his owner's death. During his owner's life, Hachiko greeted him at the end of each day at a nearby railway station. The pair continued their daily routine until the professor had suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachiko was waiting. Each day for the next nine years Hachiko awaited his owner's return. Hachiko's legendary faithfulness became a international symbol of loyalty.
Toby – a sweet 2 years old purebred Pekingese is not internationally or nationally famous. His story is not published and not well-known. But his loyalty is as big as Hachiko's. After his owner died, poor Toby almost starved himself to death. The owner meant everything to this little boy; he was the little dog’s only reason for life. And when his owner died, Toby lost this reason. He didn’t have any reason to continue living. You would say this strong grieving is strange for a dog that is only 2 years old, it would likely be expected from a senior dog, who lived with the owner for a long time. But if the dog is extremely loyal, if his feelings are deep, the time together doesn’t matter. Hachiko had lived with his owner only one year and was waiting for his owner’s return the rest of his life – a long 9 years!
After Toby’s owner died Toby went to a shelter and after that to our group. He was looking great – a gorgeous golden coat, perfect posture. But there wasn’t any life in his eyes and there wasn’t much weight left on him. He was weighting less than 10 lbs. With so many dogs around and without an owner, Toby felt lost and desperate. He simply gave up.
To cheer him up and to bring him back to life, Toby was brought to a foster home. The first couple of days there was not much progress. His foster mom literally had to chew the food to feed Toby.
But something changed about this sad creature. His eyes suddenly became bright and aware of everything. It is unclear what made Toby change, what awakened his interest to live. Maybe his foster dogs’ sibling told him something, maybe the efforts of his foster parents, maybe everything combined. No one would ever know. But it looks like Toby finally let his grief go. He started to improve with every day. Toby has gained some weight and he is continuing to do it. He is heavy and full of life. Instead of laying lifelessly on one spot he is exploring the wonders of the house and the back yard tirelessly. He is trying to play with other dogs. And he is eating, though it is still only soft food.
It turns out Toby is a real dandy when it comes to grooming. He can lay still for hours and you can turn him like a Thanksgiving Turkey from one side to another, while brushing. Toby would not mind that.
Toby is really smart, he is house trained and very quiet. For 2 weeks in a foster home he hasn’t made any noise. He is extremely friendly and laidback – he has gotten along with all the dogs he has met, even with a little noisy Chihuahua. He is not demanding at all, but if picked up he immediately becomes still due to the happiness of being in your arms. Toby is a real lap dog – there is not anything more pleasant for him, than to stay on your laps.
Without a doubt, this deserving dog, after showing such strong feelings for his first owner, has to have a great second chance with a real friend to give all his love and loyalty. If you have ever dreamed about a very loyal and loving dog, make sure to meet Toby. You will not be able to resist this great dog!
