Toby originally came from a kill shelter in SE Iowa when he was a puppy and we took him in back in 2012.. He was adopted from us a month later. He was recently found as a stray near Mason City and his microchip traced him back to Waverly Pet Rescue. Due to a series of events since his adoption, he is now back with Waverly Pet Rescue living in a foster home . He is now up to date on shots, dewormed, treated with Frontlline, tested heartworm negative, started on heartguard and was already neutered.

Toby is now about 9-years old as of June 2012 and weighs about 48 pounds. Toby is good with adults, kids, other dogs and cats. He does show a tendency to hump other dogs, but quickly backs off when put in his place. Toby is house trained, but has a hard time going more than 6-8 hours between trips outside. He is crate trained, but would rather be free to roam the house. We think in his prior homes he spent most of his time in crates. He was very reluctant to go in the crate the first few times, but after a week of repetition where he goes in the crate when we leave, and we let him out as soon as we get home, he has grown to accept going in the crate knowing he has freedom to be with us when we're home. During the night, he sleeps on the couch in the living room with the other dogs.

Toby still has plenty of energy, and shows no signs of slowing down or being unable to walk or move around. Initially he didn't show any interest in toys, but we have now found that he loves to play catch and tug. At the same time, he is perfectly content sleeping on the couch or floor and letting you do your own thing. Although he is now becoming a talker too... So far it just involves breakfast/dinner time.. maybe he learned it from the cats. He knows Sit and Shake.. we are working on stay and lay down, and he has a couple of bad habits that may be tough to break. He is VERY food motivated, so as soon as he is done eating, he will check around for any other animal's food that is still available. We found he is likes to check the counters for food, but he isn't tall enough to really get up there, but the cats knock things down to the floor for him.

Also, he will require a secure fence, he is a digger and we found that he was able to dig and crawl underneath a section of chain link fence in our yard and get loose. We got him back within a half hour, but had to add a tension wire to the bottom of that section to secure the link, and added a few camping stakes to secure the wire and fence.

We think Toby would do best with an active older couple, or as a companion for another middle aged dog. It would be ideal for him to have a home where he doesn't need to spend much time in a crate.

All animals see a vet for shots and normal exams. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done. This is normal procedure for pet rescues and shelters.
Waverly Pet Rescue puts a lot of money into medical care for each dog and cat we take in. $350 is the average cost for basic care. This does not include if the animal had an injury, required extra flea / ear mite treatments, or needed extra days at the vet office.
