Hi, I’m Tikka (#tikka_acd on Instagram) - named for the pretty white patch on my forehead. I am a 2 year old young lady, on the small and mellow side for an Australian Cattle Dog. Some people say that I look like an ACD-Australian Shepherd mix. I like learning new things and am fully house-trained. I’m spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines and heartworm and flea and tick preventatives. I like my chow - maybe a little too much - and managed to put on a few pounds in the shelter and at my last temporary foster home after getting spayed. But I am getting back into shape shape again so that I can spend even more time with my foster dad in the woods, and I was down to 31 pounds the last time I was weighed!

Speaking of my ACDRA foster dad, he says:
Tikka is a well mannered, house-trained, quiet - no barking at all, calm, easy, and extremely affectionate little two year old girl who is perfectly content to spend the entire day relaxing and hanging out with you in the house - she’s a great companion dog. She loves being with her people, so like most cattle dogs, will need a home where she has a friend to be with for most of the day. But unlike many cattle dogs, she’s very mellow and quite content to spend much of the day settled on a mat or chair or sofa somewhere near you. She has had some training (she enjoys it!) and is very good at loose leash walking, coming when called by her name, and “sit”, and getting pretty good at “down”, and “stay”. It seems that Tikka missed out on learning how to play when she was younger, but she’s starting to take an interest in “tug”, and she absolutely loves food toys - she tears around the house with her puzzle ball full of kibble. So she’ll get there with time and patience. She’s done very well with our cats and with visiting (polite) dogs, and is a good car traveller.

While Tikka is the ultimate contented couch potato in the house, in the woods she’s a happy hiker (2 - 5 miles a day so far, while she gets back into condition after her time in the shelter). Her favorites are scrambling up and down rock formations and jumping up onto and running the length of fallen trees. She sticks by your side and has no interest at all in trying to chase wildlife - a couple curious glances at squirrels, at the very most - a wonderful hiking companion.

When leash walking on neighborhood streets, Tikka can be cautious about meeting new people and new dogs - particularly loud people and barking, lunging dogs, especially so during her first 3 weeks here. She doesn’t like loud noises in general, such as loud cars whizzing by. While she has gotten much more relaxed and confident as she’s settled in and learned to rely on her new foster humans, she would be happiest in a rural or quiet suburban neighborhood home.

Tikka is located in Larchmont, NY. For questions, please contact mgirvin@outlook.com.
