Health
Vaccinations up to date, spayed / neutered, special needs. The Monkey has diabetes. However, her foster family has managed this exclusively with diet and encourages her future family to do the same. She is on a complete raw diet with no access to carbohydrates. She does have insulin and a blood sugar monitor in case of emergency, but her foster family has only had to use her insulin once (she decided to eat three pieces of pizza out of the garbage - woopsie!). Her foster family knew nothing about caring for a dog with diabetes, and learned quickly, so don't be scared away - it is extremely manageable. However, we do recommend she not live with young children so she doesn't accidentally receive treats that she can't have.

Meet THE MONKEY!

MEET THE MONKEY (aka Prada)!

This little lady was brought into the PSPCA health clinic with a handful of health issues. Her owners agreed to surrender her so PSPCA could get her back on the right health track. After a few days in their wonderful care, PSPCA asked COEL for help taking over where they left off. Her foster parents were smitten with her pocket-pit-bull size and sweet faux grumpy little mug and swooped in to help her out!

The Monkey has turned out to be a hilariously energetic and deeply loving friend. Due to her body condition, she was pretty lethargic when she first arrived at her foster home. As she has gained weight and become healthier her personality is shining. When she's not snuggling her foster dog brother, foster parents, electric blanket, or all three, she's bounding around joyfully looking for a treat or a walk adventure. If you're looking to help out a senior who still has a lot of energy, this lady is your gal. If you're also looking for a dog that snuggles like a cat (curled up in a ball on your lap, or laying directly on your face), this lady is also your gal. She has some quirks, but her love and joyfulness makes her absolutely worth it. Her ideal adoptive family would be somewhat active (enjoy talking her on walks or low-key hikes), have some dog training experience, be home most of the time, have an electric blanket, maybe a fenced yard, and perhaps have a friendly dog or two that likes to snuggle and pal around but doesn't want to wrestle.

Thus far her foster family has focused on getting The Monkey healthy. They have just started doing some work on training. We're not sure The Monkey had much training or boundaries previously, but she is an extremely fast learner who is ultra-food-motivated. Her adoptive family will have to spend time working with her on leash walking, basic commands (she's learned "sit", "wait", and "come"), and boundaries within the household. She's so excited for treats that she can be very exuberant (she's learning to take treats more gently but it's a learning process). She likes to counter-surf and dumpster-dive (we can't hold it against her too much due to how skinny she was), but is learning quickly that these things are off limits. She seems housebroken 95% of the time - that 5% is sometimes if she's left alone, or if she's gone too long without going out. She absolutely LOVES being on the couch, so her adoptive family would ideally be ok with that. She does want to sleep in bed with her humans at night, but her foster family does not permit that and The Monkey learned the bedtime routine in about 1.5 weeks.

Her most important quirk is that she has diabetes.

Another important quirk is that she has quite a bit of separation anxiety. Her foster family works from home so they are around for her almost all the time, but she follows them around from room to room and just wants to be near them all the time. Her fosters have just started introducing the idea of the crate, but this is something her adoptive family would have to continue to explore. When unattended, The Monkey goes in a spare room with a chewy treat. However, she will bark for a VERY long time. This is something to consider if you have close neighbors - while you are working with her on her separation anxiety it's possible she will be home alone barking a lot. Her ideal adoptive family would be home a lot of the time because of this. She just loves people and desperately wants to be near them.

The Monkey will take time to settle into your household and will require careful attention, patience, and energy from her adoptive family to do so. However, if you are up for it, it will be 10,000% worth it. The Monkey is the absolute sweetest girl who just needs to learn how to live in your home. If she was able to live with cats and small animals her foster family would consider adopting her - they love her that much. Please note, if you live in an area with a lot of stray or feral cats, The Monkey won't be a good fit. She is overstimulated by cats and it won't be fun for her or her adopters.

The Monkey is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love! She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She also recently received a dental cleaning and some benign lumps removed.
