Meet Tessie
Tessie's Story
-By Tessie, a 1.5-year-old, 27lb female Sheltie mix.
--------------------------------------------
I have only been alive for a little over a year, but in that time I have not had the best life. The family I ended up with did not care for me very well. I was an outside dog that was often forgotten about. I wasn't fed well. My coat had thinned out and wasn't well cared for. I was skinny, and I was just not in the best condition. That wasn't all though. I was bred. I was already skinny and already malnourished but I still gave everything I had to my puppies. My owners did not really interact with us all that much until my pups were old enough to be rehomed. Then, they started showing more interest, and soon after my puppies were all gone. I can only hope that they found amazing homes. I was once again left behind though. Left in the yard, and all but forgotten about.
I guess keeping me in the yard was still too much. Because one day my family ended up loading me up in the car, and shortly after I found myself all alone on the side of the road. I think the saddest thing was living the life of a stray...was not all that different from my past life. I was pretty much always alone then anyways. I spent my days roaming until the day I finally wandered up to someone. Sadly, I hadn't magically stumbled onto my forever family. They did get me off the streets though and I ended up in the animal shelter. I served my stray hold and was not surprised that my family never came for me. I figured if they would have still wanted me, they wouldn't have abandoned me in the first place. I knew that the odds were stacked against me. I was malnourished. I was skinny. My coat didn't look the best and I couldn't see anyone choosing a dumped mama dog. I ended up on the urgent list and I didn't see a way out. I had no say in what would happen to me...just like I didn't have a say when I was kept in that yard 24/7. Just like I didn't have a say when I became a mom. Just like I didn't have a say when I was dumped. I had been alive for a little over a year, and I never really had a say in anything that happened to me. So, I wasn't all surprised when I ended up on the urgent list and almost lost my life. It was simply just how things went for me.
I don't know if I had a guardian angel watching over me or just a stroke of luck. A shelter had shared my photo and this rescue had posted me for a foster family, and someone actually stepped up! Suddenly, I was bailed out of doggie jail. Instead of my life ending, I was given a second chance at life!
I am a fairly calm girl but can sometimes be playful. I am actually a really big fan of playing fetch! I love to chase after the frisbee and will even bring it back sometimes. I am not huge on playing with toys, but do pick them up every now and then. I have not shown any interest in playing in the kiddie pool that my foster family has set up for me. My foster has taken me on walks, and I seem to very much enjoy them. While I have never been hiking, I do think that it is something that I would like to do with my people. The only public outing I have been to is the vet, but I did very well and was friendly to everyone that I met. If I decide that you are my person, I can be clingy and will jump up for attention. I am pretty gentle about it, but I will make sure that you know that I am ready for some lovings!
I am very friendly to other dogs and will even play with them from time to time. However, I am the kind of dog that mainly only has eyes for my person. If I have the chance to be with my person and cuddle with them or play with the other dogs..I will choose my person every time! I am good with cats and pay them no mind. I am being fostered around kids and I love them. After all, having kids in the home means more attention for me! ♥ When my foster family had visitors come over, I am happy to welcome them over. And am secretly hoping that they will give me some lovings during their stay! I am all about those lovings...in case you couldn't tell ;)
I am potty trained and not a big chewer, so my foster family gives me free roam of the house while they are away. Since I have good house manners, I have no experience being kenneled since it is not necessary for me. At night, I like sleeping curled up next to my foster mama in bed. I am a pretty quiet girl, so much so that my foster family hasn't even heard what my bark sounds like yet! Given my personality and size, I do believe that I would be a candidate for apartment living.
For the first time in my life, I finally have a say in what happens to me. I finally have the life that I have always dreamed of. I get to be inside with my family, I am gaining weight, and my coat is starting to come in again. The best part though is that I have begun the search for my forever family. I truly think I would be a wonderful fit for just about any family...as long as they love velcro dogs that give hugs! ;) I have already been an until dog. Now it is time to be a FUREVER dog! ♥

EPILOGUE
-Below is an excerpt from Tessie's foster family.
"Tessie was very scrawny and malnourished when she came to rescue. She couldn’t even eat very much at a time when she first came here because her stomach was so small. She is so grateful to be getting a little TLC now that she is almost desperate for it. She looks at you with such worry in her eyes that this may not last and I just reassure her that everything is going to be ok from here on out. This girl will love you with her whole heart and soul. She will follow you to the ends of the earth and not think twice about it. She is an absolute gem of a dog and deserves to be equally loved in return ??"
