Teddy's Story

Teddy aka Circo arrived at the New York Animal Care Centers in Manhattan - the New York City municipal shelter - as a stray in March. This cute one year old boy so wiggly was going into an overcrowded shelter.

As expected he did not do well and was labeled rescue only.

He almost lost his life, but a great couple who had fostered for us in the past stepped up to save his life.

These are Teddy's STATS:

Approximate age: 1 yr.
Approximate weight: 45 lbs
Breed (s): Pit Mix
Spayed or neutered: Neutered
Good with: People and dogs. Unsure about other animals.
Kids?: Unsure but would suggest supervision with children. He is an energetic pup. Teddy is too active for little children.
Strangers? So far, uneventful – will bark when he hears noises but unsure with strangers since we haven’t introduced him to new people yet.
other dogs? Excellent with our 7 year old dog – He has a lot of puppy energy. We separate them when we see our other dog has had enough.
cats? Unsure
On leash? Teddy continues to need guidance with leash walking. He will mouth and pull on the leash when he’s overly excited. We are working with him, and his new owner will need to be consistent with training. We stop and award him when he listens. Teddy will work for treats!
Housetrained? Yes
Crate trained? Yes. Sleeps in his crate all night without incident.
Paper trained? No

A perfect home for Teddy would be one that has either a secure, fenced yard or with an active family who likes to take walks.

Teddy is an active and playful sweet boy so a family that is committed to his continued learning and boundary teaching would serve everyone best.
He LOVES to be outside, listening to the birds, smelling the air and exploring. He loves going out on the deck with his foster sister, but we have to keep him leashed because we worry that he will take off after a butterfly or something will scare him. He is still skittish, and our yard is not fully fenced in so we have to be careful.

Teddy loves down time with his family, curling up and snuggling. He also will enjoy playing with his “toys”. He needs nothing more than an old marrow bone. He prances around and plays with it proudly as if its made of gold.

Teddy enjoys playing with his “toys”. He needs nothing more than an old marrow bone as he prances around and plays with it proudly, as if it was made of gold.
A sweet behavior is when he goes out in the morning, he knows he will have breakfast when he comes in. He sings so cute for his food.

Teddy is still skittish. We think his previous owner(s) may have hit him because he gets very scared easily and ducks his head his ears go back, tail tucked, running into another room. It is very sad to see.

When Teddy came to us he was malnourished and scared. His intake notes said he was leash biting and we knew we would continue working with him to over come it. We use a front clip harness so we can control him best. Teddy responds to reward training. He wants to be a good boy all the time and come a very long way as he overcomes this.

Eating fast is something we are working on changing. Teddy was malnourished when he was brought to us and he eats as if it's his last meal. We are introducing a slow feeder dish for this reason.

Teddy can be too active for a smaller, older dog and little children. So, his ideal family would not be one with either. Our 7-year-old pit is 80lbs and solid and it is a non-issue for us.

I panicked when I read Teddy’s intake notes. I called my husband and I said, “I think we made a mistake with this one.” 4 weeks later and Teddy is none of what his intake notes said he was.

Teddy is like Tigger
He is a bouncy, bouncy, happy boy. Every day he’s Happy Go Lucky.
He is a real darling.
We don’t know his history, but he’s overcoming his skittishness and quirks more and more every day.

He can make a game out of an old, hollowed out marrow bone, as he prances around with his head held high and his big floppy feet, proud of what he has.
Teddy loves to eat and sings while he’s waiting for his food. We think he’s part hound, the way we sounds.

We couldn’t be prouder of how far he’s come. He’s a very good boy, a sweet angel who loves to snuggle and torture his big foster sister, Bella with his never ending wanting to play (or just lay nest to her) personality.

Teddy is also crate trained. We no longer keep him crated while we are at work. The dogs are kept separate during this time since Teddy is still learning. Teddy sleeps in his crate all night until he is let out for the bathroom in the morning. His preference would be to sleep on the bed with us but I am allergic and he doesn’t complain when he is put in his “house” with his bone at bedtime.

It’s been such a great experience. Of all the foster dogs we’ve had, Teddy will be the hardest to see go.
