Introducing Teddy. Teddy is a small mix who is energetic and loving.
On January 6, 2018, CRT received a call from a desperate family. A stray Chihuahua who had been roaming the neighborhood for months was curled up in their backyard having puppies. The weather was supposed to dip into the 30’s that evening, and they knew the puppies would not be able to survive that type of weather. CRT raced over to help and brought the Momma and her three puppies into our rescue. Teddy was one of those puppies! He was adopted into a loving home and has had excellent care. Unfortunately his owner is facing a very tough medical battle. She cannot give him the attention that he needs and has reached out to CRT and asked us to help find him a new home. We are happy to help. Please keep his original Mommy in your daily prayers. This is breaking her heart, but knowing he is safe makes her hopeful with her own journey.
From the time he was a puppy, he looked “different”. He was fluffy and soft. We knew who his Mom was (a Chihuahua we named Joan Jett). We never knew who Daddy was. I think we can all agree now that he is growing up that Daddy was a Schnauzer! Teddy is about 10 pounds which is the perfect weight for him. He has beautiful coloring. And he has the cutest underbite. And we love his one ear up and one ear down look! We’ll put a picture of his Mom Joan Jett in his bio on our website so you can see what she looked like! She was a beauty too. But we think he looks more like his Daddy, whoever that may be!
Teddy loves to run and play. He is super athletic and enjoys doing zoomies in the yard every day. He can jump and enjoys jumping from the chair to the couch so you can praise him for his skills! Looking back at our puppy notes, we had written that he loves to climb. So he had athletic genes from birth! He loves toys of all kinds. Teddy especially loves chasing the ball when he is in the yard. Teddy enjoys being the center of attention. He gets along fine with the other small dogs in his foster home, but he basically ignores them – LOL. We think Teddy would love to be in a home where he could be an only doggie child, and be the center of your universe.
More than anything in the world, Teddy loves his family. He follows his foster Mom and Dad around so he does not miss any family action. His Foster Dad works from home and Teddy will nap in the dog bed by his desk during the day as he “helps” Dad work. Teddy loves to cuddle and would love it if you could share lap time with him.
As “team chihuahua”, we have been doing some schnauzer research so we could understand Teddy’s personality better. Here is what we have learned: If you are family or friend to them, schnauzers tend to be playful, affectionate, and loyal. But schnauzers also can be fierce protectors. Though all dogs are individuals, in general schnauzers are gentle with children but may be inclined to bark at unfamiliar dogs and strangers. All of this describes Teddy perfectly. He is playful, affectionate and loyal. But he is also wary of strangers and will bark at them, as if to protect you. We are working with him on this, and will talk to potential adopters about Teddy’s protective nature.
Teddy has been working on his potty training. We keep him on a regular schedule and take him outside regularly. You have to watch him because he has such joy playing outside that he can forget to potty when he is out there – lol. Note that when we first got him, he would mark a little around other male dogs. This has reduced significantly. We think he is growing out of this stage, but may need a little more patience and training (and perhaps a belly band through the training). Teddy is crate trained and sleeps quietly in a crate at night. Due to the super hot weather, we have not done any harness and leash training or walks with him.
The perfect home for Teddy would be one with high-to-moderate energy and a lot of love. We believe he would be great as an only dog, but he would fit into a pack too. Teddy has an affectionate personality. He would love to hang around in your office or on your lap all day and would be no problem at all. Teddy does need a family who can check on him every 4-6 hours (would not be a good fit for a family that works away from home 10-12 hours a day). He would love to have a home with a secure yard to play in. Note that he can be a door darter and run really fast. We highly recommend a barrier around your front door to prevent him from escaping.Teddy does alert when he hears loud noises, so we do not think he would do well in an apartment environment. Because of his protective nature, we recommend an all adult home for Teddy.
