Meet Sweetie

Sweetie is a true super-dog! Watch the video linked below to see her amazing story of survival, perseverance and complete recovery and triumph over what could have been insurmountable for any dog other than this brave little fighter. Sweetie never gave up and after lots of laser and physiotherapy, is now healthy, happy and ready for her forever home!

Three year old, 17lb Sweetie, a native of Cambodia and then Thailand, is a very active dog who enjoys racing around (the loss of the fifth digit on her left forepaw doesn’t slow her down at all) and she becomes excited to go for a walk when her leash is brought out. She is fine wearing a harness and also enjoys hiking. Sweetie will need a fully fenced and secure backyard to romp in.

Sweetie’s foster reports that she lives up to her name and is very loving. This little ball of sugar likes to cuddle and stick with her humans throughout the day. She loves her walks but is also one of the most dedicated couch potatoes and can lay around relaxing for hours.

She’s completely house trained and is learning well on the leash, without a lot of hard pulling. She’ll stop and sit or pull her neck to the ground so she can sniff around, but she doesn’t yank.

Sweetie sleeps well in her crate (throughout the night and likes to sleep in) but also enjoys being on the bed with her humans. She does have a little snore that makes her absolutely endearing.

Sweetie does well with other dogs but also requires them to respect her space. When she becomes uncomfortable, she isn’t afraid to let you know – she’ll growl a little but not snap or bite.

Sweetie isn’t a big barker and doesn’t chew on shoes or dig holes in the backyard. She doesn’t show any signs of resource guarding (humans, food, toys) or a high prey drive. As is usual, she will react to dogs when walking (pulling, growling if they get too close). She’s not a fan of riding in the car yet.

Sweetie doesn’t gobble her food and is more of a grazer. She will wait patiently for it to be put down and takes treats gently.

She is affectionate, enjoys belly rubs and greets strangers without aggression, but likes to have her own space. Like most dogs, she does shed. Sweetie is just learning her commands and knows “come”.

Sweetie would do well in a home with an active single person or couple without children as she would likely do best in a fairly quiet home. She is great with the foster's dogs and seems to enjoy being around them so would probably enjoy a companion dog (but also be fine as an only dog getting all the attention).

Sweetie needs to be in a home where she isn’t left alone a lot as she can show separation anxiety if you are gone too long. She will certainly be excited when you come home from being out of the house!

Sweetie will need an experienced adopter who understands that rescue dogs need an adjustment period and that patience is key in making a dog who is experiencing a completely different kind of life feel safe and loved.

After such a hard beginning to her life, she is ready to be loved and is gaining more confidence daily!

Sweetie is being lovingly fostered in Colborne, Ontario, and her adoption fee is $525. She is spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccines.
