Meet Sweet Tea!

In early November we took in a dog who was severely shut down, unable to be removed from her kennel at the NYC city shelter, or even be collared and leashed. She was scheduled to be euthanized but we knew we just needed to get her out of the shelter. SWEET TART, renamed SWEET TEA, was petrified of being outside and showed signs of living with a dominant person who was likely a recluse or a shut in.

Today, two months later, we are thrilled to share that we are officially looking for a for SWEET TEA! She has been rehabilitated enough that she can be placed with an adopter willing to help her grow to her full potential!

SWEET TEA has recovered beautifully from surgery to remove 21 rotted teeth, most with exposed nerve. Living a pain free life has helped her open up and take in more of the world. Thanks to her incredible foster mom, Opal, SWEET TEA, started venturing outside into her backyard at the end of December. We suspect SWEET TEA had not been outside in years. She was only using indoor weewee pads to relieve herself, which she’d been trained to do. These days she heads outside for about 90% of her potty breaks and lingers to explore a bit! The video may not seem like much but when you consider her story, it’s a major mountain for her!

WHAT DOES SWEET TEA, 50 lbs., 9-10 yrs, NEED?
* Quiet neighborhood or rural community with a fenced in yard. She is not yet able to tolerate a leash so the yard is important as her new owner will need to be patient and understand she may take a long time to get used to a leash, if ever. SWEET TEA will need, and only wants, a small, quiet world.
* Low key, calm home. SWEET TEA is a senior with overall low energy. A calm, quiet home (no kids) with a person or people who like to hang out at home and who are low key is ideal.
* Pets? SWEET TEA does not appear interested in other dogs. While she could prefer to not interact with other dogs (she was uninterested in our helper dog, Joey, when she met him) this could change as she settles into her new life.
