Meet Surf (BLIND)
Handsome Surf is blind. He came to the Mt Vernon Shelter with 2 female dogs and a history of being ignored. What a forgiving and fabulous companion he is to his new volunteer friends here! We'd love for you to meet him and give him the life that he deserves.
Drawn to this boy from the time I met him. Surf is visually impaired and my initial reaction was of course sadness. But vision is not the primary sense for a dog, and a bit of reading explains that visually impaired and even completely blind dogs adapt well and learn their environments very quickly!
They are not high maintenance. Uhm, sure, at times he walks into things ? and as staff said today, a helmet might come in handy for that big blockhead of his ;) But Surf enjoys walks and play time, and is just as smart and trainable as a fully sighted dog.
Surf is a sweet boy who tends to hang kind of close – yes I’m sure it helps him to feel secure, but it's also because simply put…..HE IS A GOOD BOY!! I don’t know exactly how the world looks through Surf’s eyes, but mostly Surf seems to adapt well, and ‘sees’ with his other senses too…..including his heart!! ???
I’m pretty certain that given the chance, the bond between Surf and the human who adopts him would be very strong, and very special! ????
Surf is at the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter, Mount Vernon, NY.
