Meet Superga

Sweet Superga is the only survivor of her little family, and "survivor" is the perfect word to describe who she is after all she has been through.

Superga was found as a stray on the streets of Mexico, pregnant and extremely emaciated. Nearly every bone in her body was visible, and she was scrounging for scraps of food to sustain herself and her unborn pups. Just a few days after Mutt Scouts took her in, Superga gave birth to six beautiful puppies. She was the best mom. She loved those babies so much and never let them out of her sight! Whenever they crawled more than a few feet away from her, she would gently pick them up and nestle them close to nurse.

We soon learned that Superga and her puppies had Canine Distemper Virus (CDV). CDV is a virus that has a devastatingly low survival rate, especially in puppies. The vaccine for this virus is incredibly effective, but Superga never had a family to vaccinate her, therefore leaving her (and consequently her puppies) vulnerable to contracting the virus. Luckily, Superga had a mild case. She never progressed to the neurological phase of the virus, so we do not expect her to have long term health issues.

Unfortunately, her puppies were not strong enough to fight off the virus like she did. CDV stole the lives of all six of her puppies before they were even old enough to be weaned. It is incredibly heartbreaking, and it is clear that poor Superga’s heart is broken, too. Out of all the litters Mutt Scouts has rescued over the years, no mama dog was as loving and nurturing toward their puppies as Superga.

Superga has now recovered from CDV (like the incredible SURVIVOR that she is!) and is finally ready to start a new, happier chapter of her life. She is currently being fostered with a toddler in the home whom she has been incredibly gentle and sweet with. She is such a special girl and she deserves a forever family who will love her like crazy - we promise that your love for her will be reciprocated ten-fold. Superga is a great dog with a heartbreaking past, and we have promised her only good things are coming her way from here on out!
