Meet Suggar

Meet Suggar! She is about 9 years old, 13 pounds, and looks like a Maltese mix. Suggar came to us after her owner went into a nursing home. In her foster home, she is house trained and loves her crate. However, she is unfamiliar with leash walking, so a home with a fenced yard is a must. We can only imagine Suggar didn't have a lot of socialization in her previous home, so she can be reserved with new people and doesn't seem to necessarily enjoy the company of other dogs. With this in mind, we think she'd be happiest in a quiet, adult only home where she is the only pup. However, she could live with dog savvy cats. We are requiring she join a home with an experienced adopter and no resident or frequent visiting young children.

In addition, adopters should be home for the majority of the day (including post-pandemic) and have a positive reinforcement trainer picked out to enroll their dog with. Force-free training classes/sessions are required for all adopted dogs in order to set them and their new families up for success. Adopters should be prepared to also continue their dog's socialization and experiences with new people, places, and things, as well as expect to help them fine tune any previous training.

Her foster says, "Suggar is 9 years old, and she has had her world turned upside down with her Mommy going into a nursing home. We've only had her a few weeks but in this time she was with another small dog but she didn't want to play with our dog. She was also around 2 confident cats with whom she would bark at and chase with no intent to harm from time to time. I don't think she was ever around any other animals. She will not walk on a leash. She does enjoy a fenced in backyard! She is very attached to the carrier that she has. I believe she slept in it. She is shy in the beginning. It took her a couple days to start coming out of her shell. You need to make sure she knows when you are going to pick her up or you might startle her and she might snap/bite you. When we got her they also sent soft food which I would cover with hard dog food and she would eat pretty good. She is very sweet but timid because of her age and situation.

She is available for direct adoption in N. Dartmouth on May 7th. Please fill out an application at www.browndogcoalition.com/adoption.
