Meet Smokey Blue
I had a first home when I was a young puppy and they didn't have a fence. I wandered out of the yard a few times when I was unsupervised and they got into trouble -- so I got surrendered to Desert Haven. Are you sitting there thinking, "Umm just supervise your puppy or build a fence?!" Ya, I thought the same thing! But that's OK. I don't dwell on the bad stuff because I'm an optimistic young dog with a bright future ahead of me.
A wonderful family came to meet me while I was living at Desert Haven and decided to adopt me. I loved living with this family! In this family I had a human sibling, a dog sibling, and loving parents. They said I was super snuggly and liked sleeping in the bed with them. We went on walks together and I was very good on the leash. I had a lot of toys to play with and was a great brother to my dog sibling. I like to have a lot of attention and they gave it to me. We all lived well together for months and months; it was grand!
One day I was due for my rabies shot so my mom scheduled me a trip to the vet. No big deal right?! Well, I got anxious when I was at the vet office and I got scared. I got so scared that I couldn't even get my shot. No one is really sure why I got so scared but the fact is, I did. This traumatic event at the vet office seemed to kick off some reactivity when encountering other people, barking and going on. My family loves me to pieces and they said I'm a Great Dog -- but they decided not to pursue training or guidance to help me get on the other side of this. So now I'm back at Desert Haven. UGH!
The volunteers here at Desert Haven are already helping me to re-build my confidence at the vet office. While in their care, I have had two trips to the vet to show me that it isn't a place to fear. My first trip I still wasn't able to cross the threshold of the vet office. But the vet was very kind and came to the parking lot to give my rabies shot. What a nice and compassionate guy! A week later, I went back to try again. This time I felt so supported and I remembered the good experience I had last week and not the bad one from months earlier. After some encouragement and patience from the loving volunteer, I walked across the threshold! I got on the scale! I walked into the exam office! I welcomed handling by the vet and tech team! Look at me already building my confidence!
Here I am, Smokey Blue, young and confused about things. My family raved about having me as their dog; They love me this I know. But what I need now is a family who loves me and who commits to guiding me. I'm young and trainable and eager to please my humans. I am snuggly, wonderful, great on car trips, house-trained, loving, playful, and fabulous!
I wonder if being an only pet would help me relax and be happy in my home. I think a home that is calm and predictable will be best for me. I just need a family who will continue to help re-build my confidence. I don't think that's too much to ask!
I am Smokey Blue, Great Dog! Here we go, Third Times The Charm! Are you the family for me? Will you commit to me? Yes? Come on over to meet me then! Love, Smokey Blue
