CODE RED/ADDED TO EUTH/RED LIST FOR ALLEGEDLY being “FEARFUL” DESPITE FRIENDLY OUTSIDE KENNEL AND VIDEO WE HAVE

Riverside Shelter, San Jacinto location, So Cal – ID #A1809742 - "Smiley“ a dark cream or light red male chow mix who is estimated to be 1.5 years old and weighs only 37 lbs. Dog friendly, currently kenneled with puppies smaller than him, see video we have included in this post.

HELP!!! THIS SHELTER IS OVERFULL and EUTHANIZING YOUNG ADOPTABLE DOGS FOR MINOR REASONS AND THIS YOUNG CHOW X IS NOW AT GREAT RISK TO BE KILLED. WE ARE DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR a RESPONSIBLE HOME OR FOSTER & RESCUE TO SAVE HIS LIFE, SHELTER ALREADY ISSUED 72 HR AS OF 8/5.

This adorable young man was found as a stray and brought to this high kill shelter. Listed as a chow mix, he resembles a mini chow/golden retriever with a black tongue and only 37 lbs though.

The San Jacinto shelter originally told us he had no negative behavior or medical notes, and we named him Smiley as he looked so happy and smiling in his listing picture and was seen on a leash.

Shortly after coming off his stray hold, we had someone meet him this weekend, who said, “Smiley has go lucky personality, friendly and not at all shy to touch. My husband and I were able to pet him all over. He didn’t shy away from our 11yo son either. When the other dogs were barking he didn’t respond to them for the first five minutes. He was interested in sniffing and saying hello. He was attracted more to my husband than me. He’s good with men. My son he accepted pets/scratches no reaction really to him. Me he sat in front of and gave him good scratches all over. He just seemed very aloof, his mind racing all over. He kept his tail up, no sign of depression or anything. Not aggressive at all. He walked well on the leash with the staff member didn’t seem to pull. To sniff things he pulled. Nearly choking himself.“

Despite this, on 8/5, the shelter said behavior notes say he is “fearful/ unsocial in shelter environment”, and just listed him as “needs rescue” for this, meaning he was just added to their Red/euth list which is a 72 hour or sooner warning of euthanasia.

We obtained video of Smiley also on 8/5 and he can be seen readily approaching the kennel fence to greet someone where he shows zero aggression, wags his tail, and even tries to give a kiss.

He is now kenneled with three, unrelated and smaller shepherd mix puppies than him. Someone who met him said he was also very “smiley”.

Sadly, this shelter is notorious for making dogs “needs Rescue” and adding them to their red and euth list for very minor things at best. He has less than 72 hours to exit, although it is possible with a solid rescue commitment, they might extend him very briefly.

If you can possibly help or foster, please contact us asap at: robinmorgan@cox.net or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to assist with his placement as rescue groups need a foster to save him.

However, Smiley can also be adopted directly through the shelter and if interested in such, please contact them directly and asap.

However, please also contact us if you are wanting to adopt directly from the shelter, so we can try to assist you. Please provide his ID and use his listing link (in comments) to note your interest online. The Riverside shelter may also be reached by calling (951) 358-7387.

Rescues may email: TransferDAS@rivco.org and note the ID on any correspondence or message.
