12/5/2014: Smiley is a very friendly and sweet-natured guy. He's a 7 year old Pit Bull/Pointer/Lab mix. He's a good-looking dog with a fantastic smile. When he wags his tail — which is pretty much 24/7— his whole body wiggles! Smiley loves people and loves attention— check out his video and you’ll see him hamming it up! He's a pretty calm guy and he really enjoys just hanging out with people.

Smiley is very bright. He knows some obedience commands and is a fast learner. He's very food motivated. He keeps his kennel very clean and we expect him to house train easily. He loves playing fetch, but unfortunately he’s got arthritis and back problems which have slowed him down a lot. He is on medication and we take him in for acupuncture treatments. We do have a generous donor who has offered to help with the cost of his medication as needed to make it very affordable for Smiley's adopter. Because of his health issues, we would love to get Smiley into a home. We are also very open to placing him in a foster home — home life would be so much better for our little buddy. He’s been with us a long time.

Smiley loves going for shorter walks. He walks nicely on a leash even when he's around other dogs. He also enjoys wading in the baby pools at our shelter. And he does well riding in the car and just watches out the window.

Smiley could possibly live in a home with another dog but it would depend on the dog. He does best with calm dogs. If you have a dog you can make arrangements with us to bring your dog in to meet Smiley so that we can determine if they'd get along in a home together.

Smiley has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms. He weighs 45 lbs. We transferred Smiley to our shelter from the KCK Animal Control shelter. He was in the city shelter because his owner lived in KCK where Pit Bull mixes are illegal due to a breed discriminatory ban… it was nothing he did, he was there only because he’s a Pit Bull mix.

> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!

> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.

> An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. If you decide you'd like to adopt one of our dogs, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the dog home with you that same day.
