Shake & Bake French Bulldog New Westminster, BC

NOTE: as of March 17, 2020, our shelter is closed to the general public to help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. However, we are still processing adoptions with some important guidelines: we will accept applications and conduct phone interviews but we will NOT be able to hold meet-and-greets as we cannot practice proper social distancing. Applicants must understand that we will have to wait and see when we can resume meet-and-greets for dogs.

Shake & Bake is a handsome but complex fellow. He has some behaviour challenges that will require ongoing training and management. Please read his bio thoroughly before contacting us for more information. We will not be accepting visitors for Shake without a pre-screened application form.

Shake was surrendered when his previous family could not handle his behavioural needs any more. Shake loved the female family members, but was not happy with the males (adult and child) and showed this by growling and charging.

Shake is an assertive boy who struggles with new people. He has bonded strongly with one of our female staff members, and loves to follow her around. He does show anxiety being apart from her. He has also made friends with a few other female staffers, but he so far he seems to be a one-woman kind of dog.

Shake enjoys walks in the neighbourhood, and seems to be fine keeping to himself (e.g. he doesn't bark or lunge at passers-by) but if someone insisted on getting into his personal space, he would not be happy. We are looking for a pet-free home for Shake as he is not friendly with other dogs.

Shake is pushy. He will jump up on you to demand attention or treats. He is learning that this behaviour does not get him what he wants. This will need to continue in his new home. He is also learning to accept wearing a muzzle which will be a necessary tool for him.

When Shake trusts you, he enjoys back scratches but he is not comfortable with lots of "invasive" handling (nail trims, ear cleaning, vet visits, etc.) so he will likely need to have a pre-vet appointment medication plan to keep his stress low and a "fear-free" clinic will definitely be beneficial for him.

Shake is not fully house-trained. He requires frequent potty breaks and a routine to keep clean. He has received a clean bill of health from the veterinarian, so his challenges are behaviour-related.
