Meet Sesame

In early June of last year, this young red dog's life changed forever. He was removed from the yard where he was kept chained in the Arkansas heat.

He and the others from this dogfighting case made their way to a rural private shelter. The dogs were met with open arms. Dr. Nanci got to work triaging each of the dogs. Next, evidence photos were taken of each dog.

Holly and I went down to Arkansas to meet and perform behavioral assessments on each of the surviving dogs. Sadly, not all were still alive by the time we arrived. Some of these dogs were very sick, some beaten up, and others just could not go on.

One by one, we met and assessed the first dozen or so dogs. We found silly ones, fearful ones, some were extremely stressed or confused. A few not ready for human touch. Then, a very special one walked into the room.

Holly and I are professionals. We assess dogs all the time. But this dog, this particular dog, was different. He cautiously entered the room, low to the ground he looked around and slinked toward us. Holly and I sat down, maybe two feet from one another, and he nestled himself right in between.

The fresh punctures and a large abscess on the left side of his face, the surrounding scarring that covered his face, neck, and chest, told us some of his stories. We had a hard time deciding how and where to touch him so as not to cause pain to his wounds. We then sat there, in silence, and cried into him. In all the years of assessments I have done with Holly, this has never before happened.

He took turns in our laps, snuggling in as tightly as he could. We comforted him, and told him never again would he suffer as he had.

Sesame successfully completed heartworm and babesia treatments and eventually came to my home for foster care. Having never been a pet before, and prior to rescue never had the touch of a kind human, he had a lot to learn. He was with us for almost a year, and he has learned so much! He is now ready to move on.

This special little dog is one of the most cuddly and sweet dogs I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is low energy, loves everyone he meets, and despite the scars, he is one happy guy. And he LOVES to sleep on his back!

***November 2020 Update:
Sesame is ready for adoption. He has met the many benchmarks I set when he came to us for foster care. I don’t want to hold him back. And I want to be able to continue helping some of our area’s neediest dogs, and survivors of dogfighting.

I am a professional behavior consultant (thanks to Dan) and I have done my job. I knew his needs were great when I met Sesame. He was not good with other dogs, had open wounds that needed to heal, and wounds that took up space in his perfect little mind. He needed help.

Sesame was heartworm positive, in an acute Babesia episode which he will carry for life. Those treatments are difficult, expensive, and time consuming. But it’s not our first rodeo here at Handsome Dan’s Rescue. Babesia is complicated to treat. Many vets have no experience with these bugs. But we have access to amazing vets who have tended to many Babesia positive dogfighting survivors who have come through our programs.

Obviously, Sesame will need a very specific home. While we view every applicant for our dogs as individuals and place no restrictions on most of our dogs, Sesame has some requirements.

1. Sesame must be the only pet in the home. He does not do well with other dogs. This is a must. He can walk on leash near other dogs, and took one of my group classes with dogs near him, but he is not safe to be integrated with another dog. He is not reactive on leash.

2. I would prefer an adopter be within driving distance of my office in Cranston, RI. We are requiring post adoption training, but cost of the training is covered under a Take My Lead grant!

3. Does an adopter need to have experience with dogfighting survivors? With dogs not good with other dogs? A fence yard? A ton of money? Nope. We are looking for an adopter with a willingness to learn and give him 100% of the care and training he deserves. Training will be free and it will be with me.

4. An applicant must understand that Sesame has Babesia Gibsoni, and will always have it. An applicant must have the financial mean to treat him if/when his Babesia flairs. Babesia impacts his most medical treatments. I would prefer he stay under the care of Dr. Sam Lester. But if that can’t happen it must be under a vet who truly understands Babesia, what treatment these dogs can’t tolerate for things having nothing to do with Babesia, some drugs are a hard no for Babesia dogs.

5. No kids, teens would be fine. Why not toddlers or young kids? When his arousal level is high, from something like, play, etc. he nibbles.

That said, if you think Sesame is your guy. Head over to handsomedansrescue.org. Fill out an application. Applications will be pre-screened by Stephanie and will then make their way to me.
Thank you all for being a part of Sesame’s journey this far. We are excited to see how his next chapter will look.
