Meet Scooter

Meet Scooter, a sweet 8 year old, 12 lb. Yorkie boy being fostered in Central IA. Only applications within a 100 mile radius of Des Moines, IA will be considered.

Update: 5/25 Great news! Scooter's cruciate ligament and luxatiing patella repairs was a success! He is home resting, and recovery is going well! Recovery will take 6-8 weeks and will include post surgical rehabliltation exercise that foster mamma will do with Scooter to help his range of motion, with the goal to help him begin re-using back leg again eventually.

Scooter will also need to continue working on weight management, as he is carrying too much weight over his hind quarters, abdomen and ribs and is at risk of diabetes and arthritis if not addressed.

We are slowly starting short walks again at potty time. Scooter has been very cooperative and receptive to the rehabilitation exercises and gentle walks. His foster family is very proud of him and hopes to continue good progress.

Scooter has 2 week post operative veterinarian check to confirm his recovery is going well. We will share an update at that time.

UYR has spent $2,963.17 towards Scooter's vet bills to date, and with support of generous donors has received $812 in donations. We would certainly appreciate continued donations as we anticipate additional expenses with Scooter's post operative care follow up visit.

Thank You for your generous support for Scooter!

5/16/23 Update: Scooter had a much needed dental which resulted in the loss of 13 teeth, in addition to the many teeth he had lost previously. He's still has a great appetite, and is able to eat his meals with substantially more comfort post dental!

X-rays confirmed Scooter indeed has a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee, luxating patella and quite a bit of inflammation. He had a surgical consult and labs today, and we were happy to hear that he has been approved for surgery next week!

Scooter's foster mom is working with him on weight reduction which includes a very strict diet, and limited exercise/walks, in preparation of surgery and post surgery. Weight loss will be gradual over time.

We appreciate the donations received to date, and would appreciate continued donations towards the costly procedure to repair his knee with the goal to have him walking pain free. Please continue to stay tuned for updates. We have great hopes for this sweet little fellow!

5/10 Initial Bio. Scooter was tearfully surrendered to United Yorkie Rescue by his current family due to high cost medical issues. His family received Scooter when his original owner passed away.

Scooter's initial veterinary exam revealed he has severe dental disease, minor skin issues, and is substantially overweight. Additionally, Scooter is non-weight bearing on right hind leg, but he does still manage to get around. While he's is able to get around, he is not able to climb up and down stairs, so needs to be carried up and down stairs. The veterinarian suspects Scooter might have a cruciate ligament tear, which could require surgery. Updates will be provided once Scooter sees a specialist. Meanwhile, he has had a nice refresing bath & groom and is scheduled for much needed dental appointment this week.

Despite Scooter's health issues, he has has a wonderful personality, very affectionate and well behaved. He loves to be held like a baby, and cuddle with people.

Given Scooter's current health state, we anticipate high cost expenses for his medical care and treatement. Please consider donating towards Scooter's extensive care to help us get this sweet boy on track to recovery by clicking on the PayPal Donate button on Scooter's Looking for Love profile.
