Meet Scarlet

We could write a book about Scarlet and her journey. She turned up with her brother on a very dangerous highway. No one knows how they ended up in that location, which was a fairly remote nook of western Montana. Her brother was shot and killed by local authorities. She somehow managed to escape but was severely traumatized. ARC was contacted and hatched a plan to live-trap her.

That's just the beginning of Scarlet's story, as she turned out to be in a feral state. She would only bark and growl at people and wanted nothing to do with them. She was placed in a special foster where she got away in a fenced area and spent a week avoiding being caught.

With time, lots of gentle TLC, loads of patience, and intelligent trial and error, Scarlet started to make extraordinary progress.

Today, her favorite activity is going on leashed walks. It turns out she can coexist peacefully with cats and dogs - especially those that won't invade her space. She is not aggressive toward animals but is rather fearful if they rush her, so it is for her own peace of mind that we advise pet companions that aren't overly outgoing, rambunctious, or dominant.

Scarlet has learned to eat from human hands and is not nearly as scared of people as she once was. She doesn't generally growl or bark at strangers. She actually seems to enjoy getting petted and will occasionally find the courage to solicit petting.

She can be comfortable in a crate but prefers a couch or bed - whether dog or even human! Scarlet does not jump or climb fences. Given her past history, we will require a securely fenced area for her. Interestingly, he is not bothered by loud noises.

Despite her immense progress, Scarlet is still very head-shy and quietly wary of strangers. We are therefore restricting her adoption to homes without smaller kids. Kids aged 15 and up might be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Scarlet has become one of our very favorite dogs, especially because of the long and hard journey we've walked together. We look forward to finding a very special home for her.

The number one requirement will be patience and some experience with fearful dogs. We will also give preference to adopters within a reasonable distance of Missoula.
