Meet Sawyer
Sawyer is a lab mix male weighing about 100 lb, estimated at 5 yrs old, with low mobility.
Behaviour: Sawyer is just about the sweetest dog you’ll ever meet. Everyone who meets him loves him. He is super mellow, friendly with people, loves attention. He doesn’t jump up, is great in the car and has no bad behaviours. “Sawyer is the sweetest quietest baby ever.”
During transport he was very, very sweet and calm the whole time. “He is gentle and sweet and super loving. He ALWAYS wants affection!” He went to the beach when his foster first got him and liked the water but didn’t swim because he was on leash. Perhaps with time he will be able to swim, which may be good for his joints.
Other dogs: Sawyer is great with little dogs as well as big dogs, ideally ones that are not high energy. “He had to give Jack a schooling or two on manners (because Jack CAN be a little pain in the ass) and even then he did no more than necessary. Now, he and Jack are total buddies!! I was brushing Jack and pulled on his ear by accident and he yelped…Sawyer jumped up, ran over and pushed himself between Me and Jack to protect Jack, lol!! He is just a joy to have around.”
Cats: Unknown, but he is so laid back that cats are unlikely to be a problem.
Children: Sawyer is very loving with kids. He’s been assessed with children 8 and 3 yrs and 7 months. Children will need to be aware he has pain in his rear end and to be gentle.
House trained: Yes
Crate training: Great in a crate
Leash trained: Sawyer walks great on a leash.
Health notes: Poor Sawyer came to us as a stray with heartworm, old healed injuries, and very dry skin. He lived an awful life and deserves a home that will pamper and take care of him. He has had heartworm injection treatment (adopter must continue the treatment as per rescue’s instructions). He has an old healed injury to a leg, that is not a candidate for surgery. He also has arthritis in his rear end. Gabapentin and glucosamine have made an amazing difference in his mobility and must be continued, as must a high-end diet. He eats a 50% raw diet, and high end grain free kibble supplemented with salmon oil which has helped his skim immensely.
Ideal home: Sawyer’s adopter MUST have the financial means and common sense to provide him the extras that he needs to be comfortable. You must continue with gabapentin, glucosamine, high-end diet, and any other meds as recommended by your vet. No stairs for this boy (ramps ok). Sawyer does not need a yard – if you live in a condo and can take him in the elevator that will be fine. If you have hardwood or tile floors then accommodations MUST be made for him or he slips and falls too frequently (put down non-slip rugs etc). Sawyer can’t walk far, so would be an ideal companion for a person with low mobility.
Sawyer is vaccinated, microchipped and dewormed, and neutered. He is being treated for heartworm and his adopter must continue this treatment as per the rescue’s instructions.
A home check will be required (may be remote) to ensure there are no impediments for Sawyer in the home
