Meet Sawyer
Meet 4-month-old Sawyer, an adorable, smart, friendly, and high energy yellow Labrador puppy!
Sawyer came into rescue at 8 weeks old because he was regurgitating his solid food after he weaned himself from his momma. He was severely malnourished and was immediately taken to the veterinarian to help diagnose his medical issues and get him started on a high calorie liquid diet. Within two weeks of coming into rescue, he was diagnosed with Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA), which causes a constriction of the esophagus and does not allow solid food to travel down the esophagus normally. Lucky for Sawyer, PRAA is able to be surgically corrected and he had the surgery performed in early June. For the past month plus, we have been slowly introducing him to solid food and increasing the volume of food he consumes at a feeding and reducing the frequency in which he is fed.
Even though his PRAA has been surgically corrected, his esophagus is still dilated from when he was fed solid food prior to coming into rescue. The dilation in his esophagus may reduce naturally over time, but there is no way to know if this will or will not happen for sure. Currently, he is doing great eating two meals a day of approximately 2 cups of dry kibble mixed with a bit of wet food. In his forever home, he will need to be observed closely when he eats to ensure that he does not regurgitate his food or water.
He has really flourished since coming into rescue growing from 4lbs at 8 weeks to now at just over 34lbs. He is a typical lab puppy now with all the high energy and silliness that comes with being a pup. He requires a lot of daily exercise including walks, running around in the yard playing ball or chasing his foster fur brothers. He loves to retrieve and will pick-up and carry anything in his mouth from sticks to pinecones to even dead worms (yucky Sawyer!). In the house, he loves to chew on anything and everything he can get his sharp puppy teeth on including human skin which is a big ouch! He has destuffed many of his stuffed toys that he has received and he loves to chew on the nylabone puppy antlers.
Sawyer loves all people, but in his forever home he should not be placed in a home with young children under the age of 12. When he gets super excited and hyped up he can be mouthy and with those sharp puppy teeth that can hurt and be scary for a young kid. Sawyer is great with other dogs and gets along well with his three foster fur brothers who have diverse personalities. He is an unknown with cats as he does not live with one in his foster home, but he does have a bit of a prey drive with birds.
If you are an experienced dog owner looking for a very energetic, loyal, smart, sweetheart of a pup, Sawyer may just be the dog for you!
