Meet Jasper

Jasper is available for adoption!

Thank you BBBR Foster Dad Mike for the great new write up on Jasper. Mike writes, “This was my second time taking Jasper. He has matured some since his last visit, but let me jump to the end. When I returned him to his kennel, I watched his amazing ability to jump in the air in an effort to see what was going on outside the kennel. I was a bit astounded, as he did not do this at my house, and do believe that this is behavior is specific to the environment. He is an athletic, energetic dog. However, when I picked him up, he traveled well with me in the car. Well enough that I was able to take him with me as I went Christmas shopping at several stores. He behaves in the car....he likes the front seat but jumps in back when I arrive and often just laid down after a while.

I also trusted him alone in the house. I have a bedroom with a dog door out back into the yard, and Jasper was perfectly fine on his own. I put a blanket in the yard and he was very content to sit there in the sun. When watching tv, he wanted on the couch, which I did not allow and he was content to sit at the bottom of the couch near me. He was explorative, sniffing at food on counter or the trash, but he quickly learned to respond to "Jasper, no", even when stated in a calm and quiet voice. He eventually learned to just stay away from the trash can. He is learning to sit before being allowed to do things such as get in the car, go into another room, and even accepting dinner and treats. Part of my intention is to curb his impulsivity, and he is responding. Jumping back to when I dropped him off... as he was bouncing like Tigger in the kennel, I was able to come to the gate with a treat and calmly tell him to sit. Jasper did respond. I do think he is more sensitive to that environment than most other dogs.

Jasper will want to show affection, is inquisitive, and wants to chew. He has responded to efforts to shape that behavior in ways that are appropriate. Instead of jumping, he is starting to lean on the leg and give "upside down dog". When sniffing at things like trash, a simple "no" is starting to work. Same with chewing....if he has a tennis ball or treat he will focus on that. Given his age, he does have energy to burn off and loves to play fetch. There were times I was not ready to play with him, but he was fine just going into Turbo Dog mode in the back yard, just running back and forth....and then coming inside for a long nap.

When walking him, he still wants to sniff everything along the way, but knows to keep moving along. By providing treats as we walk, he has learned to respond when I call his name and will come back to me from the end of his leash. He is also starting to check in with me independently.

In summary, Jasper is a beautiful, healthy, mocha colored dog that also happens to be an adolescent. He would make a great pet for someone willing to show consistency in training and willingness to show the appropriate way to get his needs met. I have not given him access to other dogs or people, but I did not see any behaviors that he could not be worked with. He does self-calm and is learning to focus for training sessions. He has made strides since I had him a few weeks ago. Given the absolute difference in behavior from the kennel and my house, I do think that Jasper is a dog that can thrive better in a home environment.”
