Meet Sammie

Sammie - female - DOB summer 2022 - friendly shepherd mix. Sammie was found stray and never claimed by an owner, so is now available for adoption. Sammie was spayed July 23/24.

She listens well to commands and behaved very nicely at the vet clinic for her surgery, she was calm and on her best behavior. Sammie has been on a several leashed hikes and walks with volunteers and is very good on leash and hiking with the other shelter dogs that attended the hikes. She has been in our back runs with large, young male Hardy and was good with him. She seems to do well in a vehicle. Sammie has had a bath at our local Pet Valu store and behaved fairly well during that soggy adventure.
On a walk with one of our volunteers she met some kids and she did really well visiting them. Sammie quickly became the dog of choice for volunteers that want to take a shelter dog for a walk - she waits patiently while her human is smelling the roses enroute.

Sammie went on a trial adoption but after a week it was clear she was not good with the cats at the home so she had to return. Here's comments from her stay with them.
"She is a very smart girl. She developed the perimeter on the acreage very early on and would stay home from day one. She would be threatening towards people she didn’t know who came into the yard, particularly men. She would be the perfect guard dog if that is what a new owner seeks. She did attempt to nip and lunge at the few people who came into our yard, one of which she had met once before. But towards us she was very loyal and submissive. She loves belly rubs and treats and was so excited to see us come home. She seems to have some nervous tendencies, she wouldn’t give much of a warning that she didn’t like someone, and just go straight in for a nip if someone came towards us. To be clear though she did NOT bite anyone nor make contact with anyone’s skin - she just made it clear she was unhappy.

She cannot go to a home with cats; we spent several days trying to get her used to our kittens with no signs of change; she has a strong prey drive. She was learning the command “Sammie Come” and would listen quite well across the yard. She would follow us around the yard and keep us safe. We honestly loved Sammie and were very sad to see her go but we want a dog that will keep other animals away but also keep our other pets safe.

For someone who wants a guard dog, she does that job extremely well. It seems like perhaps she had been trained for such a role before coming to the humane society. We felt that Sammie was getting more territorial of the farm and us as she spent more time with us. But again with my husband and I she was very loyal and loved both of us. Sad to see her go but excited for her to go to a home where she can thrive with her natural tendencies and capabilities."

Regular adoption fee for dogs is $300; if the dog is too young for spay/neuter prior to adoption then a $300 post dated spay/neuter deposit cheque (OR PAD form) is also required - we don't cash this cheque but hold it until cheque date and proof of S/N surgery provided by the date on the cheque - typically when the pup is 6 months of age. Occasionally we adopt out particular animals at fundraising prices to help offset our vet bills, each fundraiser dog will be posted as such with the adoption fee noted. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter and rabies ONLY if surgery is done with our Meadow Lake vet; otherwise adopters are responsible to pay those fees at their own vets.
