Meet Ryder
Ryder is intelligent, learns quickly and is doing wonderful with his obedience. Just enough food drive to make training simple, but really he is all about pleasing his person. He has no problems being surrounded by all the dogs in his group obedience classes. Ryder is doing excellent with his potty training and is loose in the house most of the time. You can tell he had not been crate trained, as he was a bit reluctant, however we only use the crate for positive experiences, so he buikds his confidence and learns it is a safe space. A complete unicorn with his low enerygy and low drive which is a rare find in the Belgian Shepherd breeds.
We believe that Ryder has not been around small or young children because although Ryder has loved receiving pets from day one, he was a little unsure at first about being pet ALL OVER and having his tail handled. He would get very slightly timid and tuck his butt or tail a little, but accepted it nonetheless. Now he gets loved on all over all the time to desensitize and reinforce positive experience. We feel Ryder will do best in a loving, non-chaotic home with older kids/teens or a married couple that wants a fur baby to spoil or an individual looking for a devoted companion to spoil.
Ryder was surrendered by his owner to the shelter, claiming that he was not good with cats and some dogs. At the shelter, upon evaluation, he was found to be NON reactive towards dogs walking through the kennels and pretty neutral to the dogs in the play yard. They only evaluated him with dogs of his size. They do not evaluate dogs with cats at the shelter. Upon coming into our program and being placed in a loving foster home we have learned much more about this special dog. Ryder has continued to do well with dogs his size of varying ages and a French Bull Dog. He prefers to stay neutral or away from most of the dogs, as he does not like other dogs jumping on or all over him or cramping his space. When it does happen he tries to remove himself or will look away from the dog and let out a low growl letting them know he is not comfortable. Ryder is best suited for a home with no cats and only calm dogs of his size or preferably being the only dog.
For those not familiar with a Belgian Tervuren, they are actually known as a Belgian Shepherd Tervueren to most of the world. One of the 4 varieties of Belgian Shepherd which are distinguished by their coat type, color and length of fur. The other 3 varieties are the Malinois, Groenendael and Laekenois. While each variety has its own unique characteristics, they all share a similar temperament, intelligence and strong loyalty. Tervurens have a medium to long double coat which does require occassional brushing and grooming. Keeping a well groomed coat and healthy diet, will lessen shedding.
Ryder is a quiet, mild mannered, easy going dog who will be a devoted companion full of love for a very lucky family or individual to shower with love.
