Meet Rico

Born June 2021, Rico is a 65 lb. young boy who was purchased as a pet store puppy and dumped in a shelter. That is not stopping Rico from living his best life, and we are thankful the shelter reached out to us. Rico has a lot of puppy energy and is on the small side for a male malamute. He will need continued training but already knows how to sit, paw, and wait. He learns quickly with rewards-based training. His heeling and check ins are amazing! He got a little excited playing the creek and did some nervous zoomies. Our volunteer walked up the leash without pulling him and the moment Rico paused, a treat was delivered. We reinforced his calm behavior and pretty soon he was in a down position with his hip resting. He is such a good boy and ready to learn.

Rico may be able to live with a female dog companion but needs a proper introduction. He can get excited likes to jump on you or the dog he meets, so we are working distance and rewarding for four paws on the floor by delivering treats on the ground. He responds nicely.

Rico is not a fan of cars yet, but he has little experience with them right now. Rico's favorite things to do are chasing balls and eating an occasional banana!

If you are interested in adopting or fostering this dog, please complete an application:  https://form.jotform.com/60794585351161

Learn about the adoption/foster process: https://www.chaamp.org/adoption-process

Your application tells us about your lifestyle and helps us find a potential match for you and your family. We are happy to work with you. For example, if you don't have a fence, we can help find alternatives and/or a dog that will do well without a fence.

A home visit is required prior to adoption/fostering. You can visit the malamute(s) once you've completed the process. Alternatively, you may volunteer and learn how rewards-based training brings out the best in malamutes.

CHAAMP accepts applications from Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington DC.

ADOPTION FEES
~Adult dogs (two to seven years old):  $275.00
~Older dogs (eight years old or over):  $100.00
~Puppies (6 months - 1 year):   $350.00

All Malamutes are microchipped, spayed/neutered, and up-to-date on vaccines. Puppy fees are higher due to more vet visits and vaccines. The adoption fee helps us cover these costs.

CHAAMP is comprised of volunteers covering a 7-state region. We are not a shelter.

CHAAMP is a Rescue Affiliate Member of the Alaskan Malamute Assistance League (AMAL). For a list of AMAL rescues in the USA and Canada: https://www.malamuterescue.org/

CHAAMP is also a proud rescue member of the Pet Professional Guild. We say no thank you to Shock, Prong, Choke, Pain, Force & Fear. We understand safety is important to prevent being pulled by malamutes who were born to pull. We are happy to share options and other equipment to help you both be safe.
