Rex's Story
Meet Rex
5 years old
Rotti/Shepherd Mix (by appearance only)
100% Teddy Bear

Good on Leash
Crate Trained
Good with other dogs
Untested with cats
Good with children who are good with dogs

Rex is a happy go lucky "pup" currently living in foster care with his 4 dog foster siblings.

He knows his basic commands and is building up his confidence on longer duration stays and commands such as "leave it" and "place" with his foster family.

Rex is not afraid to go into his crate when asked (but there's got to be a good reward in there for him!).

He's patient in his crate, although he's also been tested and can be trusted alone without a crate for several hours without having desires of destruction.

When Rex is left outside of his crate, he very patiently waits by the door for his foster mom and dad to come back.

Rex is fully house trained and despite fosters house definitely having some smell of markings, Rex has not once marked.

Rex gets excited when it's time to go on walks and gives love gnaws when putting his leash on. We're working through this excitement of his. Once he's paws on the pavement, he naturally walks quite well. We find on some of his walks about 20 minutes in, sometimes he will grab the leash and think he's walking himself home. This doesn't happen with every walk, and usually the first walk of the day or if he gets extra excited.

We're not too sure where this comes from and are working on this minor behavioral detail with enforcing the "leave it" command.

Living in an environment with 4 other dogs, he doesn't feel the need to bark when others do.

Rex gets along well with his two friendly foster siblings. While he wants to say hi regardless of whether or not dogs want to meet him, we remind him that not all dogs want others to be in their personal space and he's very slowly learning boundaries and to focus on his handler cues during walks.

Rex would thrive in a home with another dog as he loves being around his foster siblings. Rex would thrive in an environment where his owners have confident handling skills or are willing to invest in a few obedience classes to ensure they have the ability to provide Rex with a successful future.

Important things to note:

Rex is recovering from painful skin ulcers. All adopters must be cautious of certain areas as he continues to heal. It is evident that touching some of these areas causes him concern, however he's built trust with his foster mom and most days he allows her to carefully care for these areas.

Rex has allergies that appear to be food related, which is the cause of the skin ulcers. He is currently on the road to recovery with a raw diet and we are working towards weaning him off of apoquel using a holistic approach. Rex is looking for an adopter who will continue his recovery using holistic means, as his current medication has some safety concerns.
