Meet Porter: Adopted!

12/7/2017: Porter is currently in a foster home-- if all goes well he will be adopted!

BE SURE TO WATCH PORTER'S VIDEO!

Date of birth: 11/2010

10/3/2017: Porter is a super smart, affectionate and fun Shepherd/Lab mix— and he’d make one heck of an agility dog! We’ve worked with him some on our agility course and he is a natural! Porter is very driven and an eager learner. He LOVES squeaky toys— he knows where the toys are kept and as soon as you take him out of his kennel he makes a mad dash to pick out his favorite toys! He’s also very food motivated. We’ve taken Porter to obedience classes at The Dogs’ Spot and also worked with him at our shelter— he knows several commands and loves to please. He also keeps his kennel clean and should house train quickly.

Sadly, this wonderful dog had suffered probably years of neglect before KCK Animal Control was notified and removed Porter from his previous home. He’d been living on a tie-out, which apparently had been attached around his neck since he was young and smaller. The tie-out had become embedded into his neck and we had to surgically remove it. His ears were also torn and fly bitten. Despite all that, Porter’s spirit wasn’t broken and he loved all the attention he received.

Porter is choosy about his canine friends, which is pretty typical of dogs who’ve lived on chains. He does get along very well with some dogs however and has had multiple kennel mates without any problems. He does best with submissive and/or young female dogs. If you have a dog we'd need to make an appointment for your dog to meet Porter to see if they'd get along. We do walk Porter on pack walks with other dogs and he really enjoys those. He often brings a squeaky toy on the walks, which is pretty dang cute! He also is a good jogging partner.

When Porter first came to us, he’d get so excited around people that he’d play bite and nip at heels— not uncommon for a herding dog with lots of energy and no manners! We’ve worked with him on that he’s much much better and corrects pretty easily now. Still, he wouldn’t be a good match for someone with children. He would be a great match for someone who’s got some dog experience and would love a dog who’s super smart, loyal, affectionate and driven. He’d be a great companion for that person, and lots of fun to work with on obedience and agility.

Porter is 6 years old. We’ve had him for a very long time and we’d love to find a home for this wonderful guy. He has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms. He weighs about 65 lbs.

MORE ON ADOPTING OUR DOGS...

Please visit our web site at HSGKC.ORG for more information about our adoption process, our adoption fees and all that's included, and for a pet adoption application.

> An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. We encourage you to fill out an online adoption application and submit it before you come to see us. This helps us process your application more quickly and we can schedule an appointment for you to come in so that our small staff can serve you best. If you decide you'd like to adopt one of the pets you meet, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the pet home with you that day. We’ll instead schedule a pick up date and time that’s convenient for you.

> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!

> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.

Thank you for searching for a shelter pet!
