Poncho's Story
Meet Poncho — The Biggest Goofball!

Poncho is a 6-year-old American Bulldog mix who’s making up for lost time—and having the absolute best time doing it. This 60-pound spotted sweetheart is bursting with personality, charm, and a whole lot of silly energy.

Since joining us, Poncho has discovered the joy of kiddie pools, belly rubs, toys, and full-speed zoomies around the yard. He LOVES every person he meets and greets new friends with excited wiggles and hopeful eyes. He’s still working on his manners—especially his “I’m so happy I can’t help but jump!” habit—so a home without small children would be best while he continues to learn.

Poncho spent most of his previous life outdoors, and when he first arrived, crate training and potty training were completely new concepts. But he has come such a long way. While he hasn’t been formally crate-trained, Poncho is now very accustomed to his kennel and to being in a more confined, indoor-type space for longer stretches. Because of that, we believe transitioning him into true crate training in a home will be much smoother than it would have been when he first arrived.

He’s also doing great with potty training—he’s pretty solid with it now! He does still like to “mark” on occasion, but we fully expect that to improve once he settles into a home, understands the routine, and knows what’s his at last.

Poncho could absolutely benefit from some basic training, but he’s so eager to please, highly food-motivated, and a total people-lover—which makes him an incredibly fun student. He’s shown no negative reactions to other dogs in passing, though we haven’t officially tested him with dogs or cats just yet (and his enthusiasm may be a bit much for feline friends).

Poncho’s past is behind him now, but it’s an important part of his story. He was cared for by the Detroit-based group C.H.A.I.N.E.D., who provided support to dogs living primarily outdoors. When Poncho’s previous family moved away and couldn’t take him, we stepped in to make sure he finally had the chance to know what real family life could be—indoors, comfy, and safe.

Now, Poncho is ready for that next chapter: a loving, patient home where he can keep learning, keep growing, and finally experience life as a true family dog. In return, he’ll bring endless laughs, endless love, and more joyful goofiness than you can imagine.

If you’re looking for a dog who will adore you endlessly, brighten every day, and fill your life with pure happiness—Poncho is your guy.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you would like to meet Poncho, please submit an application for me on our website https://www.friendsofmichigan.org/adoptable-dogs. He is neutered, up to date on all age appropriate vaccines, heartworm negative, microchipped, and on monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Poncho's adoption fee is $250, which covers part of the medical care he has received.

**Please note that the breed listed for each of our dogs is a rough estimate unless DNA results are provided in their Bio. All strays have rough estimates of their age based on the condition of their teeth.
Each dog is different, so each adoption is different. Our adoption process might require multiple visits to the shelter before our dogs can go home. Or they may be ready on the first visit. It really depends on the individual dog and the potential adopters. Once we receive your application, the Dog Staff will contact you to discuss meeting our dogs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you would like to meet Poncho, please submit an application for me on our website https://www.friendsofmichigan.org/adoptable-dogs.
