Polo Australian Cattle Dog / Blue Heeler & Border Collie Mix Riverside, RI

Polo is a 2.5 yr old neutered male ACD/BC mix (birthday Dec 2018) who is UTD on his shots and microchipped. We refer to him as the “colorless” heeler. Polo has back story is a bit sad. Polo was an owner surrender to the shelter and the shelter records indicate that his previous owner got him as a puppy. They said he was an ACD (border collie/blue heeler). The records show that Polo was kept crated all day while his owner commuted and worked a job in Boston MA. Then Polo was turned over to town animal control. Polo has been at the shelter since he was very young. He was a shelter favorite however he was still in a kennel. So his socialization level was non-existent but thanks to the shelter trainers and volunteers they have worked with Polo to get him to the wanna-be sport dog he is today.


Due to his lack of exposure to people and cars and everything in life, Polo is very excitable when he sees these new things. However the shelter has taught him a cool trick with stuffed toys and tennis balls to help him face anything scary. I like to refer to this trick as Polo needing an emotional support stuff animal. The shelter worked with ACDRA and transferred Polo to a foster home knowing this is the next step to getting him ready for a forever home. Now Polo is in foster care and thriving.

Polo is slow to warm up to most people but once he does he desperately wants to be by your side at all times. He is super smart and very Velcro. Polo is a toy motivated master so learning & training new things for this boy is a super fun. Polo tolerates other animals like cats in passing but would rather chase them then co-exist with them. Strangers should also be kept at a distance because he takes a while to warm up and seems to prefer women to men. But will some patience and lots of toys and games Polo even warms up to men. Trick is he will worship the ground you walk on if you play fetch, disc, or toss a tennis ball with him. I hear he even likes to play goalie and keep all soccer balls from getting by him.

We know someone out there is looking for a boy whom loves to play with toys and then cuddle next to your feet while you sit and eat dinner or watch TV. He should be the only pet in the house or be with a very mild manner dog cause all Polo knows is fence dogs and doesn’t really understand manners so he needs to learn those from other patient dogs as well and due to his excitable nature should not be around children under 12yrs old.

While we wait for Polo forever home to apply we will keep moving forward with him maybe teach him to do scent work for barn hunts. He loves to be where you are once he realizes you are there for him. Trust has not been a friend to this boy in life are you the person to help us change that.
