Meet PETEY!

MEET PETEY!

Petey is the friend that will always make you laugh. Maybe it's his goofy tongue-out grin, or his always-wagging tail, but Petey just has a way of making people love him. In return, he loves everyone he meets -- human, canine, feline, or otherwise -- and he would make an excellent addition to any moderate-energy home. Through no fault of his own, Petey found himself at a local shelter at 12 years old, when his previous owners could no longer provide for his medical needs.

Amused by his muppet-like appearance, we eagerly welcomed him into foster care, where he lives peacefully with three other small/medium dogs and a cat. He is curious and outgoing, but between the day's activities can be found snoring on his favorite bed. He loves walks and chew toys, and will let you know he needs one or the other by bopping his head into your hand for pets or licking the floor until he gets the attention he knows he deserves. On walks, he keeps a brisk pace and has good leash manners. He appreciates regular grooming, whether that's at home or at the doggy spa, and is quite tolerant of handling once his trust is gained. We have been working with him on some resource guarding behaviors, but if he has canine siblings in his forever home it would be ideal if they are willing to kindly share their toys while he learns. He is mostly housetrained with consistent potty breaks, as his Cushing's (discussed below) causes increased thirst and urination. When left unsupervised, we have found he does best in a crate.

Petey has adrenal dependent Cushing's disease, which we determined would be best managed on medication. While he is currently only a couple of weeks into treatment, we are optimistic that we will see improvements over the next few weeks, and he will likely remain on this medication for life. We will inform potential adopters regarding his treatment plan and expected monthly cost of meds. Due to the Cushing's, Petey is overweight and must follow a strict diet. Since coming into foster care he's already made huge strides in his weight loss, and needs an adopter who is willing to continue this journey through diet and exercise. Otherwise, Petey has been given praise by the vet for his overall health and silly personality!

Petey is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. He is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. He recently had a dental cleaning and benign mass removal.
