9/20/2015: Pete is a very cute Boxer/Pit Bull mix. He’s got big, brown, sad eyes and a cute white patch on his nose and chest. He’s about 5 years old and weighs 50 lbs. He gets along with most other dogs. He lived in a foster home for a few months with a Golden Retriever and some cats and enjoyed playing with the dog. If you have a dog we'd ask you to make an appointment to bring your dog in to meet Pete to make sure they like each other. He has not lived with kids but has been around children of various ages and has been nice and gentle. He is house-trained and crate trained.

Pete's foster parents said that Pete is a cuddly boy who will take over your couch, your favorite chair and your bed if you let him! He’s rambunctious for about 30 minutes a day and the rest of the day he’s pretty lazy! He hasn’t been destructive but he IS a chewer. He needs lots of hard chew toys to keep him occupied, and he likes Kongs. He can’t have bones around other dogs— like many dogs, he’s too protective of those. Pete’s a smart guy: He knows sit, stay, wait, okay, down, go-lay-down, shake, kennel and is capable of a lot more— especially if you're holding treats! He rarely barks. Pete loves human companionship and bonds very quickly.

Pete was brought to HSGKC by KCK Animal Control because he had a severely injured leg. Some idiot had shot him at close range. We tried to save the leg but eventually had to amputate. Pete gets around really well on 3 legs however. He’s fast, playful, and enjoys walks and runs – though he wears out faster than a four-legged dog. His foster parents walked him on an easy-walk harness and he is a good walker.

Pete has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms.

> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!

> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.

> An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. If you decide you'd like to adopt one of our dogs, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the dog home with you that same day.
