Pepper's Story

Hi, my name is Pepper! I'm a PURPLE pawprint, which means I will fit well into a home that meets some specific criteria. Here is what would work best for me in my new home:

-Personality: Smart, sensitive, playful, active, silly. Can be insecure/anxious - needs some help learning the world isn't so scary.
-Can Live with Kids: We are requiring dog-savvy kids/teens 16+ for Pepper at this time since she can be nervous with new things/people.
-Can Live with Cats: Unknown history, will needs slow, supervised introduction.
-Can Live with Dogs: Yes - Pepper would likely do well with another med-high energy dog of similar size.
-Can do Apartment Living: Not recommended but condo-type housing might be okay as long as she gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. She would not do well in large apartment complexes with stairs and hallways. A home with a yard would be preferred.
-Potty Trained: Appears to be!
-Bite History: Yes, Pepper was put in an unfortunate situation that resulted in her biting and breaking skin. Feel free to ask staff for more details.
-Positive Reward Based Obedience Classes Required: Yes, Pepper is required to be signed up for a red dog consult with Tails a Waggin and then will also need 3 lessons (either private or group) with a positive reward based trainer.
-Energy Level: Medium/high
-Needs Medical Procedure Before Going Home: No, ready to go!

-Additional Information:
Pepper is an intelligent, energetic dog who's had a bit of an unstable life thus far. Pepper would benefit greatly from a calm/low-traffic household that can go slow and be patient with her while she adjusts. She will need a stable and predictable routine. We have already seen great improvement with Pepper's confidence since her first arrival to the shelter. Her new owners will need to have previous dog experience and need to be dedicated to helping Pepper slowly adjust to her new life. Pepper is great at riding in the car, and doesn't seem to have separation anxiety. She can be independent but does enjoy playtime with her people.

If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application on our website (www.whatcomhumane.org/adopt) or in person at our facility. We recommend calling into the shelter after your application has been submitted so our front desk can give you next steps on our adoption process.
