Orson - big puppy sweetie boy Husky & Shepherd Mix Ossining, NY

Orson is a stunning dog.. like stop in your tracks to notice his coloring... those eyes.. his smile... all so gorgeous & unique!!! Orson arrived on our last transport and was very much into checking out his new digs.. not the least bit worried about where he was or who he was with .. or why!! He was just a cheery curious pup ready to be friends!
On his first day with us we took him for a nice long walk around the farm property.. all the while he was happily sniffing about and checking in with his new human companion.. until he came upon a field with grazing horses! Orson paused.. hackles & tail went up.. he watched intently for a minute or two and then when one of the horses lifted his head from the grass and began to advance, Orson gave out a warning bark!! SO CUTE!!! He just could not understand what in the world was about to happen... But with a soft, calm bit of encouragement from his handler Orson agreed to carry on with the walk.. he continued to watch the horses.. & enjoyed being able to stop & check on the horses from various perspectives. What interested us in that interaction was how easily he deferred to his handler.. Orson appears to have an inherent confidence in himself but since he is just a pup and hasn't had much life experience he does need comfort and guidance!

Orson thoroughly enjoyed his long walk.. taking breaks was cool with him.. He would sit .. look up at his handler and depending on what he read he'd either jump up for closer eye contact or plunk to the ground for a lounge!! While Orson is a bouncy and playful young dog he is far from wild!! He knows the joy of chillin!!! In fact, he delights in rolling around on the ground with friends, getting belly scratches and playing gentle tug games with his toys. He's so yummy and sweet, innocent and optimistic!

We started to introduce him to doggie play mates and quickly saw that he had very little social skills!! He was unaware of signals other dogs offered him, suggesting he lower his intensity.. almost like he'd just not learned social cues.. So we are taking him on group walks and letting him interact with others but not permitting him to go bananas with his new canine pals. We think he will learn.. He does adorable play bows and invites other dogs to play.. we are just helping him learn both from the other dogs and our interruptions that there's more than one level of play!!! He does play beautifully along the fence line with the several dogs we chose for him. We will continue to explore what he wants to do and how much he can pick up on learning proper dog play skills!

Orson is a fun dog.. a really fun dog! He is a joyful greeter... wants to be adored and praised and will enthusiastically work for treats.. he has a variety of really nice, natural gears.. he can be wonderfully playful and appropriately puppy mouthy in one minute and then shift into calmly sitting or laying by your feet. Orson definitely has some growing up to do but he is definitely into it and makes it loads of fun for everyone!
