Meet Oreo

Oreo arrived at our shelter as a stray back in November, 2015. We estimated his age at about 2 years and he weighed 49 pounds. No one came to claim Oreo and he passed his evaluation with flying colors. Over a week passed and his former family finally called looking for him. They told us that before he went missing, he had had a "fight" with a raccoon, and the raccoon had not been captured and tested for rabies. VERY unfortunately, they also informed us that Oreo did NOT have his rabies vaccination! Maryland law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets 4 months of age and older be vaccinated against rabies. It is also the law that an animal possibly exposed to rabies either be destroyed or endure a strict 6 month quarantine IF they do not have a current rabies vaccination. Neglecting to give one simple, inexpensive vaccination could have cost this wonderful dog his life! Sadly, his family said they would not do the 6 month quarantine. Knowing Oreo to be a sweet, friendly, happy boy who is great with other dogs and cats, too, CCHS decided to quarantine him to give him a chance at life. Quarantine is hard on a social animal like dogs. Our staff was amazing, though, giving Oreo as much attention as possible...even teaching him basic commands through his kennel gate! He now knows "sit" and "down". Oreo officially came out of quarantine on April 24th. It speaks volumes as to the strength of his temperament that he surived the long 6 months of relative isolation and is still the happy, loving, joyful dog that he was 6 months ago. This dog surely deserves a new and loving family after going through so much. He loves other dogs, ignores cats...and LOVES to play! REMEMBER to have your pets vaccinated against rabies...for their safety, the safety of your family, your other pets and the community. CCHS and the Caroline County Health Department offer low cost clinics (only $5 per vaccination) often. You can contact us for upcoming clinics.
