Meet Onyx

Onyx is a 2 1/2 year black female giant schnauzer. Onyx has probably never lived in a home before but she lived in a house but was not free in it. She lived in a crate in the house and in a run outside. She is slowly getting use to our other dogs. She is a happy girl but doesn't really know how been told a couple of times to back off which she does but she is afraid. She was afraid of every thing at first but is slowly getting use to the world.

Onyx will NOT be adopted to a home with children younger than 7th or 8th grade and possibly not then for several reasons. She is a very powerful girl with far more energy than the average giant and that is a lot of energy. She has been trained in several skills but not in the skills of living in a home. She does not hesistate to come running up to us and leap in the air going well above my head. Her teeth clack and she barks. We can control her and I think over time this will subside, but won't place her in a home with kids. She responds well to the come command as well as the sit command. She was supposed to be obedience trained and she does seem to have some commands coming back to her.

Another reason that she won't be placed with kids is that she has a vision problem in her left eye. Her eye is sound but in 10/2013 something happened and caused her eye to protrude. A tooth was removed and the eye sunk back into her skull causing the lower lid to cover her eye blocking the vision. Her vision in her right eye is excellent. She is learning to compensate for the loss in the left eye but it is a learning curve. She loves to fetch but I make certain that she can see me throw from her right eye. The condition is called orbital Cellulitis

All of her bloodwork was normal. We love this dog but already have three female giants and that is probably enough. She does love both men and women. She does need exercise daily and a couple of times a day. She loves to run and run and run. She walks fairly well on a leash.

This giant will not go to the people that want her unless you are the best home for this girl. We definitely prefer someone in the immediate Phoenix area for her. You must be someone more than willing to continue to slowly work with her to acclimate her to living in a home and living with people. Training as with most giants will be a continuous and ongoing event. You must be willing to work with an incredibly energetic dog with vision problems. She needs a lot of exercise multiple times a day. This may not be a dog for the dog park. A home with a large yard would be best. In a large yard she can get her exercise and learn other things as well with the help of her new owner.

Oynx's adoption fee is $375. If you are interested in this girl, please email us phxgsrescue@hotmail.com Applications in the immediate area are given preference and you need to be within driving distance to come and pick up a dog. We do not ship our dogs. When you adopt a dog from us and for some reason it doesn't work, the dog be returned to VSGSR and a full refund is given with in the first thirty days. Any dog adopted from us at any time comes back to Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue if the adopter can not keep the dog. We are responsible for our dogs for their lifetime. And we hope our adopters are also. Each dog will have been neutered, had full panel blood tests done, been microchipped and up to date on all of his shots. We do prefer that you be within driving distance of Phoenix to adopt one of our dogs. If the adoption doesn't work out for some reason with in the first thirty days, the adoption fee is refunded upon return of the dog. Our contract states that during the life of the dog, should something happen that you can not keep any of our dogs, the dog must be returned to VSGSR. Should a family member wish to adopt the dog, they would be given first priority. We are responsible for our dogs for their entire life. If interested, please email us at phxgsrescue@hotmail.com for more information. Emailing is the best way to contact us as we are all volunteers.
