Worthy Dog welcomed Ollie back into the rescue, and are committed to finding his forever home. We felt he would benefit from a more formal training program, and enrolled him in the Happy Hounds Prison Dog Program right before the holidays. He’s done great with his training and is a very smart pup who just needs the right environment.
Initially, Ollie would guard himself around new people, was reactive to other dogs, and was protective of his crate. The training staff worked with him and figured out how to introduce him to new things. The key is letting him initiate interaction in his own time (it doesn't take long). Ask him for a sit or down and give a treat, or walk with him when you first meet him and give him time to get familiar. He is not the kind of dog that a stranger can just run up to and hug or pet, so he’s not a good fit for toddlers or young kids who don’t always understand boundaries. When given a little space, he interacts well with just about everyone and plays great with most of the dogs in the program. He even has a best friend named Maverick.
Because of Ollie’s progress in the program, he was given overnight privileges recently and went home with one of the officers associated with the program. He spent the weekend with 3 kids, 2 dogs, cats, and chickens. He was nervous around the toddlers but bonded right away with the 11-year-old boy in the home. He interacted well with the 2 dogs but was not a fan of the cats and chickens. Ollie needs a calm home, and would be ideal for a couple or a single owner, or a home with another dog and older kids. Mostly he needs an owner who understands him and will offer him a consistent routine.
Ollie can adapt to be a great companion and is very smart. He adores and respects his handler who is able to put Ollie in a sit-and-stay, leave for 3+ minutes and return with Ollie still sitting obediently in the same spot. Awesome! He’s made so much progress, and still has some time left in the program.
We look forward to helping Ollie find his true forever home. Apply today.
